Jack is the player-character in BioShock. In the beginning of the game he is onboard a plane that crashes into the Atlantic Ocean, but Jack manages to swim to a lighthouse and take a bathysphere to the underwater city of Rapture. It is later implied that it was in fact Jack who caused the plane to crash. Jack is actually only two years old and his maturation was accelerated via an unknown method employed by Frank Fontaine. He is the illegitimate son of Andrew Ryan and a Prostitute, allowing him to use Bathyspheres and Vita-Chambers because his DNA resembles that of Ryan's.
Atlas is an Irishman who guides Jack through Rapture, hoping that Jack can help him find his family. However, this family is killed in a submarine accident, caused by Andrew Ryan. He then orders Jack to kill Ryan and aids him in completing this task.
When Jack reaches Ryan, it is revealed by Ryan that Atlas has been using Jack as a slave through the words "Would you Kindly", a phrase that Atlas has been using against Jack throughout the game. After Jack kills Ryan, Atlas reveals himself to be Frank Fontaine, a businessman and conman whose intentions were to take control of Rapture. He betrays Jack by sending bots after him, but Jack is saved by Tenenbaum, who helps him free his mental conditioning.
When Jack finally comes face to face with Atlas/Frank Fontaine, Fontaine is injected with huge amounts of Adam and becomes a hulking creature. Jack manages to get all the Adam out of Fontaine and kills him with the aid of the Little Sisters.
Andrew Ryan is the creator of Rapture, who made it as a way to escape laws and government. When the player arrives in the city, Andrew Ryan mistakes him for a CIA spook and sends his splicers after him. When Jack got closer and closer to defeating Ryan, Ryan realised that he was under control of Atlas. Ryan managed to show Jack how to be a man and not a slave and not to obey Atlas. He had Jack beat him to death with a golfclub. He didn't revive in his vita chamber, as it was turned off.
Big Daddies are common enemies in Rapture. They are former humans whose skin is grafted into a classic-styled diving suit.
Dr. Brigid Tenenbaum was the original creator of the little sisters, and also discovered the sea slug called Adam. She regretted what she had done to the children, so asked Jack to save them when he arrived in Rapture and she will reward him for every three little sisters he saved. She assisted Jack when Atlas betrayed him and took over the city.
She returned in Bioshock 2 briefly when awakening Subject Delta and giving him information about his former little sister Eleanor and that he needs to find her. She then left with some little sisters and planned to help more people flee the city.
Subject Delta is a prototype Big Daddy and the first to successfully be bonded to a Little Sister. Besides having access to standard Big Daddy weaponry, he can also use Plasmids and has a certain degree of free will. Formerly an explorer from the surface world who discovered Rapture, he was known as "Johnny Topside" by the locals. He was later ratted out by Stanley Poole, who told Andrew Ryan that he was from the CIA, leading to him being locked up in Persephone and at some point undergoing the process of becoming a Alpha-series Big Daddy bonded to Eleanor Lamb, daughter of Sofia Lamb.
Sometime during New Years Eve of 1958, Eleanor was attacked by a group of splicers under Lamb, who proceeded to use the Hypnotize Plasmid upon Delta and forced him to shoot himself in the head. A decade later, Eleanor managed to contact Tenenbaum via the Little Sisters and the two reprogrammed the Vita-Chambers to revive Delta.
