Charles Cole Baglin was born 27 November 1847 in Horsley, Gloucestershire to Daniel Baglin (1824-1891) and Ann Cole (1824-1899) and died 9 May 1926 in Minchinhampton, in Gloucestershire, at the age of 78 years of unspecified causes. Charles Cole married Frances Hanks 29 December 1869 in Horsley, Gloucestershire.
Charles was a bell ringer at Horsley Church, the same church where he married. Charles, Chairman of the Minchinhampton Parish Council, Gloucestershire, was presented a clock with and inscription commemorating his years of service with the council; the clock was on show in the Bell Inn. On one occasion following a council meeting, Charles was being driven home in a pony and trap by his son George, when they were confronted by a large pile of stones in the road placed there by a group of potential robbers. George drove over the stones and they escaped; and the culprits were later sent to prison for their misdeeds.
George Baglin (1882-1947), a son of Charles Cole Baglin, was called up for service in WW1 being 'rounded up' in 1916 when they wanted more men; although he was 35 years old with a wife, Gertrude Ethel Watts (c1883-1962), and young family. He served in France and then Northern Italy to help the (then) allies fight the Austrians.
Apart from his military service, George always worked for himself. He used to turn out his horses and cattle to graze on Minchinhampton Common, Gloucestershire; 700 acres of grassland. He used his own land for hay making, and the whole family would help with this. He would also haul stone and coal by horse and sell his own milk; which was delivered by his son Colin.
Emily Baglin, born 1884, took over the licence of the Bell Inn, Burleigh, Gloucestershire on the death of her father, Charles Cole Baglin, in 1926. The pub was shut in 1965 and Laurie Lee, the author of ‘Cider with Rosie’, was there on the day it shut; Laurie Lee was interested in village life and didn't like to see the old village pubs being closed down. Emily's sister-in-law, Gertrude Watts (married to George Baglin) came from the village of Slad, a few miles north east of Stroud. This is the village around which Laurie Lee wrote his book, Cider With Rosie; some say that Gertrude's great grandmother is reputed to be the person on which Granny Trill, a character inok, was based?
