Born in Sandusky, Ohio, Barney married the daughter of prominent Philadelphia financier Jay Cooke. Barney & Co.[1]

In 1938, Charles D. Barney & Co. and Edward B. Smith & Co. merged to form Smith Barney & Co.[1]
