Charles Douglas Pou was an
award-winning journalist and columnist for the
Atlanta Journal. He
was married to the author
Genevieve Pou; they had two daughters. During
World War II, Pou served as a bomber crewman in the 467th Bomber
Group. After the war, he returned to the United States. He and wife
Genevieve Pou settled in Atlanta, where he wrote for the Atlanta
Journal from 1948 until his retirement in 1970. At the time of his
retirement he was the political editor for the newspaper as well as
a columnist.
Pou worked tirelessly as a reporter to improve the
accountability of the Georgia state government. As a result of his
extended reporting, state law was changed to require surplus funds
deposited in state banks to draw interest. At one point, the funds
totaled $50 million, and after the law was enacted, earned $1
million annually in interest for the state treasury.
The
Madison native won writing awards for his coverage of prison
abuses, which led to the closing of the Wilkinson County prison
camp and an end to legislative junkets and illegal actions by the
state Board of Pardons and Paroles, among others.
He died of
renal failure in Atlanta, Georgia, on Jan. 30,
2001.
