Charleston Scott "Charles" Jefferson(born on
November
17,
1964 in
Ocean Springs. was a
former news person for
WENR-TV in
Chicago, and is now host of now the number 1 talk
show,The
Charles Jefferson Show, and is the host
of Max Television's new reality series,
Now You See
It.
Charles parent's divorced when he was nine years
old, because his father found out that his mother was unfaithful.
His mother remarried in
1980.
Charles received his degree in political science from the
University of Mississppi. He moved
to to
Illinois and
attended the
University of Illinois in
Chicago. There he earned his master's degree. A year later, he
also earned his degree in journalism, which he was majoring in. From
there on out, Mr.Jefferson's life would not be the same, anymore.
When he lived in Mississippi, he worked for a local radio
station. In
Chicago, he
was hired to broadcating
WENR-TV five,six,and ten o'clock newscasts. Charles
started his work on
Septemper 12,
1983.
WENR-TV was in the bottom 2 least most watched
newscasts in the Chicagoland. When Charles took over the spot for
another man who retired, the ratings went through the roof.
Chicagoans were tired of seeing the same old faces on local TV
everyday. They wanted something new. They found that something new.
It was Charles. At that time, it was too many white newscasters on
the air. People wanted new things:so they got them. They loved his
Afro hair, and Southern accent. This was a new beginning for
Chicago news.
A year later in
1984,
WENR-TV
was the most watched newscast in Chicago, all thanks to Charles,of
course. General manager,
David Hopkins promoted
Charles with the job everybody wanted: to host their brand new
morning news show. The show was titled
People Are
Talking, an hour long talk show that premired right after
The
Past,Present,& Future Show went off. At first, the ratings
were not good. But no need to fear, the great Charles Jefferson is
here! And they were right. After the first few months, the ratings
started to raise. It was a good thing for the whole
WENR-TVfamily. Charles co-ancored the
show with
Jennifer Gayheart.Things weren't always
too good beteew the two. There was one big problem: Charles was
black, and Jennifer was white. There was a rumor going around that
said Jennifer got paid more money than Charles. Also, a rumor about
Charles
sexuallyharsassing a woman producer of the show.
None of it was true. In
October of that same year, the two worked out there
differences and got along.
People are Talking
ratings were still good. Jennifer quit the show after only one
season. Charles continued the show until
1987, when Mr. Hopkins had a big change for Charles. In
August 1987, the management of
WENR-TV ordered to change the show's name. The
staff had no idea what to call the show. A month later, Mr. Hopkins
came up with the perfect idea for the new name of the show. It
would be The Charles Jefferson Show. Everyone agreed. So from here
on out the show would be now known as The
Charles Jefferson
Show. The Charles Jefferson Showdebuted
nationally on
September 7,
1987. Over 2
million people tuned in to watch the show.
The
first show was on how to choose a mate. The show was a hit and had
the highest ratings of any other talk show at that time. On
Thanksgiving Day 1988, Charles did a highly controversal show on
Sexual
Prediters. During the audiences questions, a guy by the name of
Jack Mantle was talking about "kikes" and called
Mike Downs a "Uncle Tom". Mr.Downs walked over to
Mr.Mantle, and placed his hands around the boy's neck, choking him.
Soon after, Mr. Downs punched Jack in the face. Audience members
stormed the set, guests shared punches, and Mr. Mantle's bodyguard
threw a chair across the room, which knocked Charles cold out.
Charles suffered minor injuries and went to the hospital after the
show was done taping.
The Charles Jefferson
Showreceived its highest ratings, and was news even before
the show aired. In
1990,
Charles formed
Selrahc Productions for his show. It was
Charles's production company, in which the company produced and
owned
The Charles Jefferson Show. In
1993,
The Charles
Jefferson Show was nominated for 8 Daytime
Emmy's for best talk show and talk show
host. The show won all 8 of those awards. In
1994, Charles created a website for the show. The
website itself won the
NAACPImage Award for well-designed website. In that
same year, Charles met the woman of his dreams. Her Name was
Jessica Mallberry. Her and Jefferson knew each
other for 8 years. They tied the knot on
December 7 1994, in
Las
Vegas. They dated in the past and had a daughter in
1989.
The Charles
Jefferson Show was in re-runs for 2 and a half weeks.
Today they have 3 beautiful daughters. They're names are
Zoey,Jessica Jr. , and Sarah. They know how famous their daddy is,
how many fan letters he receives in one day. The whole family is so
proud of the son, husband, father, cousin, uncle that Charles had came
to be.
Today
The Charles Jefferson Show still
remains in the top 10 Talk Shows list, which Charles is in # 2.
In
2004, Charles was named
"Hero of the Year", for getting inner-city kids off the streets,
and back into school.
The Charles Jefferson
Show used to tape at the
WENR-TV studios, but in
1992 Charles purchased a 60,000 sq. foot building,a nd
turned it into a studio for his sucessful show. In
2005, he became host of Max's
Now
You See It, a reality show in which 8 contestants compete
in challenaging stunts for cash prises up to $1 million.
