Born in Madurai, Chimbu was the second child of Mr. Venkatraman and Mrs. Thiraviam Venkatraman. His original name is Senthilkumar. His father worked in the telegraph office as an overseer. Simbudeven has a bachelor degree in botany from Madurai Kamaraj University.
Among his various cartoon characters was Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi which was the subject of one of his films later.
Chimbu then worked as an assistant director to the film maker Cheran. His first film as an assistant was Vetri Kodi Kattu. He has also worked in the films Pandavar Boomi and Autograph with Cheran. He has worked in the films 'Dheena' and 'Ramana' with Director A.R.Murugadoss.
