Chōjin Sentai Jetman (鳥人戦隊ジェットマン, Chōjin
Sentai Jettoman
?), translated into English as
Birdman Squadron Jetman, was the
fifteenth entry of the Super Sentai television series. Produced
by the Toei
Company and Bandai, the
series aired on TV Asahi
on February 15, 1991 to February 14, 1992, with a total of 51
episodes. This Sentai is a homage to the Science Ninja Team
Gatchaman anime series. Unlike the previous series, Jetman
has a darker and more serious story.
Plot
This series takes place in 199X[1] on the
Earth Ship, the command center of an international defence agency
called Sky Force, the guardians of peace on Earth. In the ship,
scientists have developed "Birdonic Waves", a newly developed
technology which gives the subject superhuman abilities.
Experiments called "J-Project" were successful. Aya Odagiri, the
director of the project, chooses five elite Sky Force officials
from Earth to use this technology. Ryū Tendō, one of the Sky Force
officers, is successfully exposed to the Birdonic Waves, making him
the first Jetman, the Red Hawk.
However, the Earth Ship is suddenly attacked by Vyram, an evil
outer-dimensional organization bent on inter-dimensional
domination. They successfully destroy the ship, apparently killing
Ryū's lover and fellow candidate member Rie. In the chaos, the
remaining Birdonic Waves for the other four officials become
scattered on Earth, hitting four civilians. Odagiri and Tendō
successfully escape and begin searching on Earth for the four
remaining Jetman, training them to aid them in stopping Vyram's
plans of conquering their dimension.
Jetmen
Based at the Sky Camp (スカイキャンプ, Sukaikyanpu
?), a high-tech base provided by the
Sky Force (スカイフォース, Sukai
Fōsu
?), the Jetman can launch their mecha
from it.
- Ryū Tendō (天堂 竜, Tendō Ryū
?)/Red Hawk (レッドホーク, Reddo Hōku
?): 26. He is originally a Sky Forcer
codenamed "W6" and leader of the Jetman. Being the only official to
become a Jetman, his policy is to be always professional and never
let feelings affect himself in battle. This comes to a conflict
when he discovers that his beloved Rie had become Maria, which
later caused Gai's inner sense of justice to awaken during the time
he fantasized he was still with Rie. He does not drink alcohol but
loves hot milk without sugar, but ironically drank with his former
rival turned best friend Gai in one episode. He married his fellow
Jetman and support in difficult times Kaori in the series finale.
He is often wearing Red Gold's Gym gloves. In a comical moment in
one episode, he slapped Raita at the back of his head as the latter
was putting too much mousse on his head or when he fell into the
bathing area as he was fooled by Gai and Raita where Kaori, Ako and
Aya were bathing. In the final Battle, He fell off the Jet Garuda
when he urged Aya and his four teammates in the Jet Icarus to stab
Radiguet while Ryu was using Jet Garuda to restrain the former, in
which his helmet vanished followed by his suit. Ten years later,
Red Hawk was among 23 Red Rangers summoned by Liveman's Red Falcon to inspire the Gaorangers in Hyakujuu Sentai
Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai.

fighting and martial arts mix: his combat skills match Ryū's,
though he fights dirty and hits below the belt sometimes. He
initially clashed with Ryū when drafted against his will, but
eventually became friends. His interests include motorcycle,
saxophone, gambling and womanizing. He loves Kaori, and often tries
to flirt with her, without results, which ends up on him suffering
from the frustration of his unanswered feelings. When she finally
accepts him, they have frequent problems on their relationship as
both are too different. He is Rivals with Grey in which he later
defeated the latter in their final encounter, in which a part of
his helmet was damaged. In a completely random act of violence, he
is apparently stabbed to death by a thug three years after the fall
of Vyram on his way to Ryū and Kaori's wedding while trying to

has feelings for her, vowing to protect her even if he has no

the boredom of her heiress life. She is good at Kendo and best shot in Jetman, Kaori learned in
battle and in the middle of a love triangle with Ryū and Gai what a
spoiled rich girl she was and what the really important things
were. Raita also had feelings for her. She does sometimes use her

left upper leg of the Great Íkaros.

the following series Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger.
Dimensional War Party
Vyram
The Dimensional War Party Vyram (次元戦団バイラム, Jigen
Sendan Bairamu
?) appears as a clan of
outer-dimensional nobles, who conquered many worlds in the Back
Dimension, and are now moving on to Front Dimension, ours. They
boast on being gods, while they despise humans and see them as
stupid and worthless. Their base of operations was the
Vylock (バイロック,
Bairokku
?), a brain-shaped castle capable of
traversing dimensions. After their leader got lost in the Back
Dimension, its four leading members compete in a game to defeat
Jetmen with the prize being full-leadership.
- Back Dimensional Count Radiguet (裏次元伯爵ラディゲ, Urajigen
Hakushaku Radige
?): A cold-hearted officer who is the
nearest presence to a leader of Vyram and will do anything to
accomplish his goals, even help Jetman themselves. He would not
acknowledge anyone who stands above him so had a terrible grudge
against Tranza who overpowered him. Radiguet wields the
Demon Sword Bloody Gate (魔剣ブラディゲート, Maken
Buradi Gēto
?) and can transform into his true form,
Radigan (ラディガン,
Radigan
?), when enraged. When Juuza returned to
power, Radiguet attempts to kill her and end being punished for his
treachery by living as a human with no memory of his life in Vyram.
Cared for by Saki, a girl on the verge of death, Radiguet
unconsciously saves her life with his power. But though he wanted
nothing to do with his past, Radiguet eventually regains his
memories and helps the Jetmen in fighting Juuza. After killing
Juuza to acquire Semimaru, Radiguet kills Saki to discard his
humanity before nurturing Semimaru to assume its adult form. He
absorbed Robo Veronica's energy to power himself up so he could
defeat Tranza to become Vyram's leader. Near the finale, Rie,
having been released from Radiguet's control, stabbed him on the
back, at which point Radiguet knew that he lost her forever, and
killed her so Red Hawk could not have her. Ultimately, he fuses
with Vyrock to become the giant monster Raguem
(ラゲム, Ragemu
?) whose armor could not be penetrated
by any weapon except the area where Rie wounded Radiguet. Using
that knowledge, Jet Íkaros attacked there with the Birdonic Saber,
and fatally wounded Radiguet who, cursing the Jetman and swearing
revenge, was defeated.
- Tran (トラン,
Toran
?, 1-36)/Emperor Tranza
(帝王トランザ, Teiō Toranza
?, 36-47): A psycho kinetic child who
suggested the game to settle who would be Vyram's new leader. He
specialized into creating toy-ish monsters to satisfy his fun
desires, and thought both enemy or ally fatalities as "just part of
the fun". Being the youngest of the Vyram was a big complex to him
until one day the constant anger became unbearable, making Tran
undergo a super-rapid growth, becoming Emperor Tranza and seized
leadership of Vyram. In addition to his psychokinetic powers, and
newfound arrogant nature, he wields the Boltranza
(ボルトランザ, Borutoranza
?) longsword. But after being defeated
by the Jetman in final combat as a result of Radiguet's trickery,
he ended up becoming a vegetable in a mental institution and what
becomes in him in the canon is unknown.
- Maria (マリア,
Maria
?, 1-49): She was formerly known as
Rie Aoi (藍リエ, Aoi
Rie
?), ranked Sky Forcer W3, a love
interest of Ryū's who plays the piano. Though originally to be a
Jetman, Vyram's attack on the Earth Ship resulted with Rei being
sucked into space. However, Rie is saved by Radiguet, who
brainwashed her to be devoid of her memories as a human and made an
official of Vyram. However, though he loved her and tells her that
she is his, Maria defies Radiguet to suit her own agenda to be
leader of Vyram. She loves to battle, and her methods are cruel and
cold. She is armed with the Necrod, with sword, gun, and whip
modes. The monsters created by her were often motivated by envy,
and attacked mainly women. Since the Camera Jigen incident,
unconsciously playing the piano due, Maria develops a relationship
with Grey after. Since then, she played piano music for Grey
despite not knowing why as her identity was found out the
relationship got difficult. Grey was willing to let her go if it
made her happy. Near the end of the series Radiguet implants a
parasite on her body to increase her power, but it turns her into a
vampiric creature. She was slain by Radiguet after reverting to
Rie, before dying she managed to back-stab him with a sword which
allowed the Jet Íkaros to finally kill him with the same maneuver.
Died in Grey's arms repeating Ryū's name. Her ghost later appeared
in the finale, saying goodbye to Ryū after his marriage to
Kaori.
- Grey (グレイ,
Gurei

always the most reasoning one in Vyram. He is armed with the
Grey Cannon (グレイキャノン, Gurei Kyanon
?), Mulshot Gun (マルショットガン,
Marushotto Gan
?), and Hand Greyzer
(ハンドグレイザー, Hando
Gureizā
?). Despite being a robot, he showed
human feelings, especially love for wine, music, cigarettes, and
particularly Maria, learning to play the piano from example. As a
result, Grey supports Maria in shielding her when fighting Jetman.
In the end he realized Maria wasn't his to keep and was willing to
let her go to Ryū. Grey is Gai's rival they battled in a last duel,
with Grey mortally damaged as Gai lit his one last cigarette as a
sign of acknowledgement as a worthy rival before Grey shuts
down.
- Empress Juuza (女帝ジューザ, Jotei Jūza
?, 17-18): The previous ruler of Vyram,
referring to herself as the mother of all creation, Juuza along her
underlings Radiguet, Grey, and Tran had conquered the Reverse
dimension's worlds. While able to use telekinesis and breathe fire
in her human form, Juuza can assume a Demon Beast
form where she fires bullets from her fingers and shockwaves and
beams from her mouth. Thought to be dead in the last battle in the
back dimension, she actually went under a long sleep to regain her
strength after acquiring the Semimaru and incubating it, and came
to Earth via a meteorite. She makes her presence known by causing a
momentary blackout across the city. By the time the Jetmen
investigate, finding Radiguet as he was about to kill her while
asleep, Juuza emerges and resumes control of Vyram. She then
proceeds to turn every human in the city into a crystal pillar so
she can feed Semimaru. The Jetmen nearly lose to her as Gai is
affected by Juuza's spell. After banishing Radiguet for his
treachery, Juuza resumes her attack as the Jetmen battle her before
Gai succumbs to Juuza's spell. With some unexpected assistance from
Radiguet, the Jetmen destroy her forehead crystal to free everyone
she turned into crystal. Enraged that her face is scarred, Juuza
assumes her Demon Beast form as the rest of Vyram and Black Condor
join the fight against her as the Jetmen use the Fire Bazooka to
defeat her. Near death, she is killed by Radiguet when his jabs his
sword onto her throat just before Semimaru hatched.
- Grinam Soldiers (グリナム兵, Gurinamu Hei
?): The black-skinned grunts born from
Grinam seeds. They are armed with axes and capable of launching
explosive shells from their hands. The group were later summoned by
Zaigan during Super Sentai World.
Dimensional
Beasts
The Dimensional Beasts (次元獣, Jigenjū
?) are monsters born through the fusion
of a Dimensional Bug (次元虫, Jigenmushi
?) parasite, which assimulates with any
material it comes in contact with. The resulting creature would
often possess supernatural powers and / or weapons reminiscent of
the object. Even if the Beast is destroyed, if the Dimensional Bug
survives, it can revive and enlarge it.
- Dimensional Bug Mother (次元虫 (母), Jigenmushi Haha
?, 1-2): A alien monster sent to Earth
by Radiguet to drain people of their lifeforce with her tongue and
convert into energy for her babies in her abdomen, the Dimensional
Bugs. She was the first opponent the Jetman fought at
half-strength, mortally wounded by Red Hawk before Radiguet saves
her. After detaching herself from her egg sack, the Mother is sent
to attack the Jetman, destroyed by all five.
- Fighter Jigen (ファイタージゲン,
Faitājigen
?, 2): This giant monster was originally
Chokan's jet that she used to search for the two remaining Jetman
but Radiguet interferes with the mission and plants a Dimensional
Bug on the jet, starting its transformation into a monster. Though
it tried to devour Chokan inside the cockpit, she managed to break
free and parachute off the jet. It later went against the Jet Hawk
in a dogfight before it grabs Gai to use as a hostage. But once Gai
is freed and saved, the Fighter crashes and assume full monster
form, able to fire orbs from its mouth. However, Red Hawk manages
to destroy Fighter Jigen by shooting at the exposed gas pipe.
- Faucet Jigen (ジャグチジゲン, Jaguchijigen
?, 3,27): Originally a faucet implanted
with Tran's Dimensional Bug, this monster uses its pipes to wrap
around its victims' necks, strangling them. Faucet Jigen later
attacks Ryū while he was trying to convince Gai to join their group
as the others come to his aid, getting all four in a corner until
Gai returns. After being thrashed by Black Condor, Faucet Jigen is
destroyed by the Jetmen.
- Road Jigen
(ロードジゲン, Rōdojigen
?, 4-5): Originally a traffic light
infused with Radiguet's Dimensional Bug on its thigh, this monster
caused trouble by disrupting the traffic from traffic light
malfunction to ripping the road. Though it overpowered the Jetman,
Road Jigen is defeated once White Swan arrives at the nick of time.
But once enlarged, Road is wounded during the fight with the Jet
Machines. Once fully healed, Road Jigen resumes its attack and was
the first monster destroyed by the Íkaros Haken.
- House Jigen
(ハウスジゲン, Hausujigen
?, 6): Originally a hotel mansion
infused with Radiguet's Dimensional Bug on its forehead, this
monster managed to devour many people before the Jetmen meddled in
its feeding affairs, forcing House Jigen to reveal itself and
attack the city. This was the first monster destroyed by the Jet
Íkaros.
- Mirror
Jigen (カガミジゲン,
Kagamijigen

Manga
A two-part manga epilogue to Jetman was written and
released in 1996 by Akiko Fujii, in cooperation with the series'
writing team (still under the Saburo Yatsude pen name)[3]. Set
five years after the series (and, therefore, two years after the
story ends), it shows the four remaining Jetmen rejoining to battle
a revived Radiguet, who had possessed Tranza's broken body.
Radiguet kidnaps Ryu and Kaori's one-year-old daughter Aya Tendou
and, much in the same way he turned Rie into Maria before, he
accelerates her growth and brainwashes her into becoming Ruma, whom
he considers a daughter. Meanwhile, Gai's empty spot in the team is
filled by a young rock guitarist called Jeff Kensaki, who is
empowered by Birdonic Waves after a meteorite crashes next to him,
and becomes Green Eagle. In this manga series, the Jetman uniform
is slightly different, with the helmets more closely resembling
those of Gatchaman (translucent, protruding visors, and
uncovered faces).
