Chris Royal is
a starting
Cornerback for the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Pioneers of the
Arena Football
League 2. Chris was a
free safety at
Marshall
University. As a junior in 2004, Royal was second in the nation
in
interceptions with six. He returned an
interception of
UCF quarterback Steven Moffet
for a touchdown. The 5'10", 209 lb. Royal saw action in nearly
every game with the Herd since his freshman season. He started one
game at
strong
safety as a sophomore against national powerhouse
Tennessee. He averaged more than 24
yards per kick return in his sophomore season. He has returned
kicks and punts over the last 2 seasons. He had a 70-yard punt
return against UCF that set up
Marshall's first touchdown of the game en route to
a 21-7 victory. He finished his career at Marshall with 9
interceptions.
Chris had an outstanding pro day following his
senior year at
Marshall University. He ran a 4.4 40
yard dash,
bench
pressed 225lbs 21 times and had a 35" vertical leap. Only four
scouts were on hand to witness his performance due to the fact that
the Marshall football team had a below average season
overall.
He started at
quarterback for two years at
South
Lakes High School in
Reston, Virginia. Royal led the Seahawks to
their first playoff appearance since 1991 in his junior season at
South Lakes. That year, he passed for 1600 yards and 16 touchdowns,
both of which were school records. As a senior, he mirrored those
stats, and added a school record/state high eight interceptions
while starting at cornerback.
After high school, he attended the
Fork Union Military Academy,
where he played quarterback and
defensive back. He led the team with six
interceptions.
Currently he plays WR/DB for the undefeated
(12-0)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Pioneers of the
Arena Football
League 2 . He is having an outstanding rookie season with the
Pioneers as the leader of their top-ranked defense. They are
changing the way the defense is played in a league known for very
high scoring games.
