In Eritrea the principal religious groups beside Islam are the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church of Eritrea, and the Roman Catholic Church. [1]

About 30 % of the population are Orthodox Christian. [2] The Catholic dioceses in Eritrea are Eparchy of Asmara, Eparchy of Barentu and Eparchy of Keren. [3] In 2002, Isaias Afewerki declared all not allowed churches enemies of the state. [4] More than 2000 persons are detained due to their faith. [5]


Protestantism is below 5 % in Eritrea. [6] Protestant denominations include Christian Brethren, Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, Evangelical Church of Eritrea, Lutheran Church of Eritrea, Middle East General Mission, and Seventh-day Adventist Church.[7]
