Chrono Crusade (クロノ クルセイド Kurono Kuruseido?), also known as Chrno Crusade, is an eight volume manga series authored by the Japanese mangaka Daisuke Moriyama. It was originally published by Kadokawa Shoten in Monthly Dragon Magazine which began serialization in November 1998. A 24-episode anime television series based on the manga ran from 2003 to 2004 on Fuji TV. The animation work was done by Gonzo. The series was released in North America by ADV Manga and ADV Films, titled Chrono Crusade.

Set in the United States during the 1920s, Chrono Crusade follows the story of Rosette Christopher, and her demon partner Chrono. As members of the Magdalene Order, they travel around the country eliminating demonic threats to society, while Rosette searches for her lost brother Joshua.

Chrono Crusade is set in the height of the Roaring Twenties, where jazz is king, bootleg liquor flows freely, and the mob rules the streets. It is a time of prosperity, luxury and decadence, and the division between rich and poor grows even wider in the wake of the First World War. It is at such times of great change and upheaval that the dark things that lurk below the world of man can come to the surface. In the world of Chrono Crusade, a fictional organization known as the Order of Magdalene (or more specifically, the characters of Sister Rosette Christopher and her soul-bound demon partner, Chrono) exists to fight the demonic threats that appear with increasing regularity across America. Both Rosette and Chrono are revealed during the course of the story to be driven by a shadowy past, centered around a search for Rosette's lost brother, Joshua. Joshua is shown to have been taken from her by the sinner, Aion, a devil who shares a dark and bloody history with Chrono, and seeks nothing less than to overthrow Heaven and Earth.

The anime follows the manga through the first half, but it diverges halfway through, creating different courses of events and endings. The characterization of some the characters, including Rosette and Aion, and their roles in the story were changed in the adaptation of the manga. Much of the story is driven by the individual pasts of the main characters and the complex relationships between them.

The Order of Magdalene is an organization of the Catholic Church that banishes devils and demons to Hell. The Order has many branches around the country; each one is presided over by the Council of the Catholic Church. The New York Branch of the Order is headed by Kate Valentine and Ewan Remington, who lead the fight against the forces of darkness. The Order has many members; however, in times of great crisis, other less generally accepted individuals may be introduced into the Order to help fight the forces of darkness.

They use various weapons, including various guns and swords. Guns use Sacred, standard bullets containing Holy Water, and Gospel, bullets with alchemized silver. Tetragrammaton, a gun with high power against demons with low backlash, is given to Chrono. Besides using guns, there are members of Order with special powers as well, using devices like tomes, violins, or dolls. They also use Angel Capture Fields, specialized barriers that can repel demons, their power, and other astral based substances, and Soul Dive, an experimental system used to dive into souls. The order uses the Barrier Ship "Metatron" during great crisis.

Rosette Christopher (ロゼット·クリストファ Rosetto Kurisutofa?)
The impulsive, 16-year-old, protagonist of Chrono Crusade. Rosette is an elite exorcist of the Order of Magdalene and goes out on missions to destroy deadly spirits and devils. Her primary motivation is to save her brother Joshua, who has been captured by Aion. Because of a contract she formed with Chrono when she was 11, her life is slowly ticking away. Despite this, she continues to run towards her goals confronting every challenge with a headstrong attitude. This attitude allowed others like Chrono and Azmaria to push forward as well. She loves Chrono and is willing to sacrifice more of her life in order to make sure he's alright. At the end of the series, she is able to live a few years longer, then dies after getting to be reunited with Chrono one last time. At the end of the anime, she and Chrono go off to a house in an isolated place where she dies with him while sitting on the porch.
Chrono (クロノ Kurono?)
Rosette's contractor and assistant. In the past Chrono has helped Aion in his fight for freedom from Pandemonium. However, when Aion told Chrono to kill Mary of Magdalene, he refused because of his love for her. As a result, Chrono betrayed Aion. Fifty years later, he met Rosette and fell in love with her as well. For this reason he is highly protective of her. Since he lost his horns to Aion in a fight he formed a contract with Rosette and is feeding off her soul as an alternative to the astral energy he would be getting from his horns. Whenever possible, Rosette can unseal his true devil state for the cost of even more of her life though Chrono has forced her seal open causing disasterous results. In the manga though, Rosette has unsealed Chrono significantly more times than in the Anime.
Azmaria Hendric (アズマリア·ヘンドリック Azumaria Hendorikku?)
The Apostle of Benevolence and Songstress of Vegas. Azmaria is a 12 year old girl with the gift of healing people through her voice. She has suffered great grief, for this reason she is sensitive to others' words. Though tries her hardest to help out and change herself.
Satella Harvenheit (サテラ·ハーベンハイト Satera Hābenhaito?)
A jewel summoner and bounty hunter who kills devils. Her entire family was wiped out by the "hornless demon", who turned out to be Aion, save for her and her older sister Florette (AKA Fiore). She is now the search for her sister, who was taken by Aion. At first she feels uncomfortable around Rosette and the others due to their trust with Chrono, a hornless devil she thought was Aion, but after spending time with them, she recognizes them as her friends. In the Manga, she is significanty friendlier with the others, and even flirts around with Chrono, much to the annoyance of Rosette.

Magdalene Order

Sister Kate Valentine (ケイト·ヴァレンタイン Keito Barentain?)
Head of the New York Branch of the Magdalene Order. She is a strong willed woman who often seems out of place fighting demons and devils. She leads the order with an iron resolve, making sure the New York Branch Office runs as smooth as clockwork.
Father Ewan Remington (ユアン·レミントン Yuwan Reminton?)
The minister of the Magdalene Order. He also serves as a field agent and second in command to Sister Kate. In the Anime, towards the end he leaves the Order. He is seen quite a while later, looking about the same age but unshaven, when the third Prophecy of Fatima happens, just before, seeing someone who appears similar, if not the same, to Aion. He also has the apparent ability to warp, moving from the Magdalene NY HQ to a carnival in San Francisco instantly without anyone's notice. Immediately afterward, during the phone conversation with Sister Kate, he states that he is an Angel. He later states "I am A Sinner", after he severs ties with God, declaring "I have no regrets about my torn wings". In the manga, it is revealed that he had initial history with Chrono as he was the boy who failed to save Mary Magdaline from being kidnapped by Chrono. It is also revealed that he suffered an injury that would have ended his duty in the order and volunteered to be infused with Legion (a devil's equivalent to cells) in order to continue his work. After the events of the story, he retires but continues his duty as a father of the Catholic Church.
Edward "Elder" Hamilton (エドワード·ハミルトン Edowādo Hamiruton?)
Elder is the person who makes the weapons used by the exorcists. He also has a great love for women which is why he may appear perverted, though he greatly cares for all the girls.
Sister Anna (アンナ Anna?)

Duke Duffau
The leader of his own army. He allied with the Magdalene Order to fight against the Sinners and manage to eliminate Genai. He led his troops on an attack on Aion but was slain along with the rest.
One of the members of Duke Duffau's army. He was killed along with his enemy Viede (one of Aion's Sinners).
  • Voiced by: Masayuki Nakata
One of the members of Duke Duffau's army. He followed Duffau on the attack against Aion but was wounded by Rosette's holy blood. He managed to escape and went back to Chrono to warn him about Rosette, but died of wounds soon after.

Aion (アイオーン Aiōn?)
The antagonist of the anime/manga series. He is a Sinner and a demon. He is also Chrono's twin brother. He is after all of the Apostles, including Azmaria, for reasons that are unknown until Chrono reveals them. In the Manga, his goal is to rebuild the world out of the "system" that binds everyone to their respective roles.
Joshua Christopher (ヨシュア·クリストファ Yoshua Kurisutofa?)
He holds allegiance to Aion's Sinners, and is also the Apostle of Hope and Rosette's little brother. He is able to freeze people's time with the use of Chrono's devil horns, given to him by Aion. He was tricked into taking Chrono's horns and following Aion because he didn't want Rosette to have to take care of him all the time. He wanted to be strong enough to take care of her and be her support instead of the other way around.
Florette "Fiore" Harvenheit (フィオレ/フロレット·ハーベンハイト Fiore/Furoretto Hābenhaito?)
Fiore is a very powerful jewel summoner who is Joshua's caretaker/maid (whom he refers to as "older sister"). When she was younger she was taken by Aion, who erased her memory. Aion replaced her memories of Satella with memories of Joshua, which in turns makes her think that Joshua is her brother. She is completely devoted to Aion and Joshua, vowing to always protect Joshua no matter what. Later when she encountered her sister Satella she had no idea who she was. However, in the manga, she retained her memories and insisted that her existence as "Florette" ceased the day she died.
Rizelle (リゼール Rizēru?)
A Spider-like sinner who can cast a spell that paralyzes its victims which thus can be controlled like puppets. All she desires is to be helpful to Aion. Rizelle knew Chrono before Chrono left the sinners. She is one of the six members of Aion's team and the first one to be killed.
She is one of the six members of Aion's team. She is the one that invented the devices Chrono and Aion have to absorb "astral" since they no longer have horns to absorb energy from the Astral Line. She's the fourth to be killed by Remington. In the manga she survives the events of the main story and continues to live in modern America.
He is one of the six members of Aion's team and also the second to be killed along with his enemy Carv.
He is one of the six members of Aion's team. He wanted to avenge Rizelle after learning that she had been killed. He's the third to be killed by Duke Duffau.

In an interview with ADV Manga, Daisuke Moriyama expressed his own opinion about the differences and similarities of the anime and manga, with one of them being the theme of the story. Although the bond between Chrono and Rosette and the idea of time running out were the same, Moriyama felt that the anime and manga showed this theme in different ways. While the anime centered more on the currents of time, fate and trust, Moriyama believed that the manga focused more on the Rosette's individual ideology and how the potential strength of her will can change her current situation.[1]

In producing the English language version, ADV did extensive research in keeping the slang words within 1920s canon. One word, "bimbo", is explained to mean a tough man in 1920s slang, while the modern version refers to a stupid female.[2] The English voice actors for Rosette and Chrono (Hilary Haag and Greg Ayres) nearly lost their voices on numerous occasions due to the fast-paced voice work demanded by the anime.[2]

Written and illustrated by Daisuke Moriyama, Chrono Crusade is comprised of 59 chapters, called "Acts". It premiered in the November 1998 issue Dragon Age and ran until its conclusion in the June 2004 issue.[3] The individual chapters were published in eight tankōbon volumes by Kadokawa Shoten from December 1999 to September 2004.

The series was licensed for English language release in North America by ADV Manga in 2004. In addition to releasing all eight volumes of the series, ADV Manga published some of the series chapters in its anime and manga magazine NewType USA. The series was released in English in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment. It was also licensed for regional language releases in France by Asuka Comics, in Mexico by Grupo Editorial Vid, in Italy by Planet Manga, in Germany by Carlsen Comics, and in Denmark and Sweden by Mangismo.[4]

Chrono Crusade was first aired on Fuji TV in Japan on November 23, 2003 and ran for 24 episodes until its conclusion on June 10, 2004. The series is licensed for an English language release in North America by ADV Films, which aired its English dubbed version of the series on Showtime Beyond in the United States from February 17, 2006 to July 28, 2006.

Original Soundtrack, Volume 1 and 2 were composed by Masumi Itō, under her pseudonym, Hikaru Nanase.

A light novel adaptation, Chrono Crusade: Wings, They are the Light of the Soul (クロノクルセイド: 翼よ、あれが魂の灯だ Kurono Kuruseido: Tsubasa Yo, Are Ga Tamashii no Akari Da?), was published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten on April 20, 2004. Written by Tominaga Hiroshi and illustrated by Miyazawa Hiroshi, the novel is an original side story for the series, in which Sister Rosette and Chrono investigate strange events in St. Louis.[5]

Rosette Christopher

  • Let me ask you the reverse. How is it that you can give up so easily? [exaggerated sigh] I can't understand that...attitude! "It's bad luck! I have no choice!" People who passively accept their fate...because no one knows their future, least of all me, so I don't dare put things off. I have to do what I can, while I can still do it, so...I'll be kicking and screaming, 'til the very end.
  • Good, because only those who believe will be saved, so they say. Get it? Ha ha ha!
  • When you're having fun, have fun, and when you're angry, act angry...and when you want to cry your eyes out, do it! Because after you've cried, you feel better.
  • When you keep your problems to yourself, and force yourself to smile, the person it's hardest on is you.
  • [to Chrono] It's because my time is limited, that I don't have any doubts. It's all thanks to this. That's why I can walk straight ahead, it's why I can always keep going...because I have you with me.

  • Oh, applesauce! You've wrecked another jalopy. Sister Kate is going to KILL us!
  • [to Rosette] I change things. I want to believe that anything can be changed. The moment I met you, a new world opened up for me. You see, after wandering in the darkness for so long, a light brought me happiness. It's all thanks to you.
  • I want to protect much, that it covers your part of my heart.
  • Now I understand that we have to be incomplete.

Azmaria Hendrich

  • My wings have always called forth unhappiness.
  • Are regrets...all you have? You're not the only one with regrets, you know! I couldn't help her either...and now Rosette is suffering by herself! The two of us are the same, we both fought alongside Rosette! And...Satella too. Maybe there's something I could have done to help her, but's too late to change any of it. But the friendship, the time we had together, means something! [ holds up the photograph ] Look! You can't deny even the good things we shared! You can't pretend those precious moments didn't exist!
  • Rosette...Chrono...I will become stronger! So please, watch over me, okay?

Father Ewan Remington

  • I have no attachment to torn wings.

  • Even at a time like this there’s not a single word of rescue from the one you worship. You see? That is the truth of this world. He doesn’t watch anything and doesn’t save anyone.
  • I am the Alpha and the Omega. I am the beginning and the end.

[During a conversation with Chrono, Rosette looks down and sees Elder under the table looking up her dress]

Edward 'The Elder' Hamilton: I see Paris, I see France, I see someone's...

Sister Rosette Christopher: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

[Rosette blushes red and covers her skirt]

Edward 'The Elder' Hamilton: This time more whiter than the french fry.

[Rosette takes the spoon from Chrono's bowl]

Sister Rosette Christopher: Perverted old man! I'll kill you with this spoon!

[Elder rolls to his side, dodging Rosette's thrust with the spoon]

Chrono: [watching the rain fall] Depressing, isn't it?

Sister Rosette Christopher: No. Considering we were up all night on a mission, and they ask us to do the shopping on our way home. I'd say it's more than depressing, it's the absolute worst.

Azmaria Hendrick: [being tossed around in the back seat] I'm sorry, I said I could do it by myself.

Sister Rosette Christopher: What are you talking about? It was obvious to all of us that you couldn't do it alone!

Azmaria Hendrick: [the phone rings] Oh, the Phone! Whoah!

[falls down]

Chrono: Oh, are you all right, Azmaria?

Azmaria Hendrick: Yeah, I'm jake.

Sister Rosette Christopher: You just stay put. Chrono answer the phone!

Chrono: Huh what?

Sister Rosette Christopher: Can't you see I'm busy? Someone's gotta drive!

Chrono: Hello? Oh, Father Remington, Rosette can't answer the phone right now.

Sister Rosette Christopher: [grabs the phone and talks excitedly] Oh, hello, Father.

Chrono: Oh boy.

Azmaria Hendrick: Should she do that while driving?

Sister Anna, Sister Mary, Sister Claire: [all Girls in Unison] Hi, Chrono!

Sister Anna: Is Rosette writing more apologies? Then again, I guess that's what happens when a servant of God destroys an entire building.

Sister Mary: A building? I heard it was a whole block

[Sister Anna, coils in surprise]

Sister Claire: Actually I heard it was a whole island.

[Anna coils in greater shock]

Sister Claire: It must be so hard

Chrono: [sheepishly] Well, it happens every time.

Sister Rosette Christopher: [shouts] It happens every time?

Sister Anna, Sister Mary, Sister Claire: [unison] Oh, Rosette!

Sister Rosette Christopher: A whole block, was it? An Island? Blowing people's mistakes out of proportion is so much fun, isn't it?

Sister Rosette Christopher: BUT WERE YOU THERE?!

[Rosette moves her head around, seeing the girls run away]

Sister Anna: Who would want to be teamed up with you?

Sister Rosette Christopher: [while driving erratically] Say, why do you think Sister Kate is such a pill anyway?

Chrono: Could it be because you are always doing things that make her angry?

[the slot machine in the casino rolls two 7's and a lemon, Rosette is frustrated]

Sister Rosette Christopher: Chrono...gimme another!

[Chrono slaps her hand]

Sister Rosette Christopher: Hey! What's in your bonnet?!

Chrono: You've had it, nun girl! This is no time to be gambling around in a casino!

Sister Rosette Christopher: [suddenly coy] Oooh, but poopsie...we've come all this way to Sin City, so why not sin a little? Besides, how often does a girl get to wear something like this?

[she wiggles her rear at him]

Sister Rosette Christopher: Don't try to tell me you don't like it, too. Loooook, Chrono! Gimme a coin! C'mon, big spender...just one more?

Chrono: [obviously half-tempted, half-scandalized] No...the mission comes first!

[he attempts to pull her away from the machine, she holds on]

Sister Rosette Christopher: [whining] Whaaa, I don't want to go! Can't you hear?! The slots are CALLING me! Pleaaaase?

[she breaks the machine handle, both panic and run away]

-Rosette and Satella enter a shop-

Shopkeeper: Can I help you with something?

Rosette: [startled, then nods] Yes!

Shopkeeper: Please, tell me!

[Awkward laughs and chuckles are exchanged until Satella can't take it anymore]

Satella: Hurry up and tell him what you want!

Rosette: Okay, already!

[she squares herself and takes a deep breath]

Rosette: [deathly serious] Do you have a cold medicine that would work, even on a devil?

Sister Rosette Christopher: You know, I really do like this view. I wish I could go on looking at it forever.

[Chrono smiles, then sits beside Rosette]

Sister Rosette Christopher: Hey...

Chrono: Hm?

Sister Rosette Christopher: ...I was thinking about undoing the seal. If I did it, then you could heal all of your wounds, and everything would be jake--[puts her hand to the pocketwatch]

Chrono: [stopping her with his hand] No, applesauce, Rosette. Being here with you is what's really important right now...and I don't want to lose anything else. Not ever again.

[Rosette considers, then takes her hand off the watch, and instead places it on top of Chrono's hand]

Sister Rosette Christopher: I think about them sometimes, and wonder how everyone is doing.

Chrono: Uh-huh.

Sister Rosette Christopher: But for right now...I'd rather just be here with you.

[they watch the sunset in silence for a moment]

Sister Rosette Christopher: In these past few months we've spent together, I've wanted to say so many things to you. But the words...just won't come. [her eyes begin to tear]

Chrono: [looks at her concernedly] ...let's go back inside. I think you should lie down and rest.

Sister Rosette Christopher: But I don't want to rest yet...not yet. I'm just...[beginning to cry] so scared, Chrono!

[their fingers lace together and Chrono's grip tightens]

Sister Rosette Christopher: [sobbing freely now] I'm scared! I DON'T WANT TO DIE!

[she throws herself into Chrono's arms, crying against his chest]

Sister Rosette Christopher: [weakly] I...just live a little longer. that so wrong?

Chrono: [now crying along with her, holds her tighter] Oh, Rosette...
