Community description

City Terrace is located atop the Monterey Hills at the heart of "East Los." The district's steep, winding streets are lined with generally well-preserved Spanish Colonial houses.

Like most of Eastern Los Angeles, it was once considerably more diverse, with large Jewish, Serbian, Italian, and Japanese populations in addition to its Mexican/Chicano plurality, but since the 1950s it has been solidly Latino and predominantly working-class. Gangs have been a serious problem in the area since the 1970s, although the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has made some progress in combating them through community policing.[citation needed]
