City on a Hill Press, originally launched in 1966 as The Fulcrum, is the student newspaper of the University of California, Santa Cruz. Designed as a magazine, the weekly tabloid-sized paper releases new issues every Thursday of the academic quarter, for a total of 30 issues per school year.
The paper serves to bring relevant news and features not only to the campus of UCSC, but also to the population of Santa Cruz, California. The current desks are Campus, City, Health/Science, Politics & Culture, Arts, Sports, Gender/Sexuality, Diversity, and Investigative.
In winter 2009 the paper launched a daily news blog, SlugLife, to supplement the weekly content produced in the newspaper.[1]

The current editors-in-chief, as of the 2009 winter Quarter, are Samantha Thompson and Daniel Zarchy. Samantha Thompson, an American studies major from Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, served as a sports reporter for three quarters before becoming sports editor for two more quarters. Daniel Zarchy, a Global economics major from Albany, CA, served as a copy editor and National News reporter before taking over as World/National editor and managing editor.
Before spring 2008, the editors were Claire Bergeal and Claire Walla. Claire Bergeal, a History of Art and Visual Culture major hailing from Stamford, CT, served as the CHP production manager for a number of quarters. Claire Walla, a Literature major from Studio City, CA, worked for City on a Hill Press as an Arts Desk writer and a Campus Desk Writer before taking a year off to study in Sweden. She came back to City on a Hill Press as the Health/Science Desk editor, then served as Managing Editor before becoming co-Editor in Chief.
Before spring 2007, the editors-in-chief of City on a Hill Press were Leah Bartos and Ian A. Stewart (publishing under the pen name I.A. Stewart). Leah Bartos, a native of Santa Barbara, California, graduated in 2007 with a degree in Anthropology. She previously edited the Music, City and Gender/Sexuaility desks. She has covered a variety of noteworthy topics including sex workers, the infamous UCSC anti-war group Students Against War (SAW), police brutality, immigrant rights protests, the Taser-attack at UCLA and the best coffeehouses in Santa Cruz. Ian A. Stewart's journalism background is in sportswriting, which led him to a year-long stint as a sports writer for the Santa Cruz Sentinel his sophomore year at UCSC. He then returned to City on a Hill Press first as a Sports and Campus Desk editor, then as co-editor-in-chief. Stewart, a fourth-year European history major from Crown College, University of California, Santa Cruz and a pitcher for the UCSC club baseball team, is a native of Berkeley, California. He has been featured in Hustler magazine as a guest writer.
Although campus coverage has been a permanent fixture to the paper, the other desks are often adjusted from quarter-to-quarter to best fit the strengths of the current editorial staff. In winter 2007, the National/International desks were separate, while in previous quarters, the Music desk and Arts/Entertainment desk were separated. The Multicultural desk was eliminated after winter 2005 due to the lack of a suitable editor, but is back in fall 2007 as Diversity. The Gender/Sexuality desk has not always been a permanent fixture to the paper, and staff members in the late 1980s adamantly refused to devote any column space to sports coverage.
Michelle Camerlingo and Carley Stavis currently serve as the fall co-managing editors.
As of winter 2008, CHP includes the following desks with the following editors:
Dylan Chapgier and Phil Carter are the photo/illustration editors, and Phil Carter is the multimedia producer.
Kyle Smith is the art director, a new position that oversees the integration of photo and illustration with page design.
The paper was named the 1986 College Gold Crown Newspaper by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association,[2] as well as Best All-Around Student Newspaper in 1983 from the Society of Professional Journalists. Editorials and illustrations have also received CSPA awards in the past two decades. Most recently in 2007, the paper received CSPA honors for cover design and page layout.
Alia Wilson (spring 2007 Health/Science editor) and Daniel Zarchy, were awarded the Katharine M. MacDonald Award for excellence in student journalism by the California State University, Sacramento Center for California Studies and the Sacramento Press Club for their 2006 story[3] about immigration legislation in California.[4]
Sam Laird (fall 2006 City reporter, winter 2007 City editor) was awarded The Chronicle of Higher Education's fifth annual David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists for writing and reporting that he did while at City on a Hill Press, as well as a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Certificate of Merit for News Feature Writing for his 2007 story[5] "The Colorblind Society: Are We There Yet?"[6][7]
Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize winning journalists Dana Priest[8] and Martha Mendoza.[9]
