A clear span structure is an assembled framework
of aluminum box-beam arches that support the fabric roof and define
the shape of the structure in much the same way as a pipe
frame-supported tent. The stronger construction of the aluminum
frame makes these tents suitable for larger or longer-term
applications than other types of structures. The box-beam framework
also allows for large areas of unobstructed "clear span" space
beneath the fabric roof. The larger structures require heavy
equipment because of the size and weight of their parts. Popular in
Europe, these tents come in widths ranging from 40-200 feet wide.

Due to the
unique engineering of clear span structures, all
inside space is usable. There are no internal poles or columns to
interfere with interior plans or to obstruct viewing. These
structures or buildings allow you to maximize space for any
application, as they offer superior height and width options. Often
referred to as "super series" or "mega series" structures, these
are actually trademark names of Mahaffey Fabric Structures.
History
The tent is the symbol of ancient Arabia. The Ottomans
gave it a new direction making it a royal structure, which was set
up for ceremonial occasions and trips. The tent was adopted in
Europe initially for the same function, but later was developed
into roof style used in large buildings such as botanic gardens,
rail stations as well as for camping.
The origin of the tent
goes back to ancient times used by the Chinese and nomads of
Mongolia. The Roman used it principally as a military shelter
accompanying their soldiers as they spread over much of the old
world. But it was among the Arabs where the tent became a great
symbol and always had an important role in the cultural and social
life of the Arabian community.
As said above, while tents came
into existence during the 17th century in Asia, Mahaffey Fabric
Structures introduced the clear span to North
America, particularly the U.S., in 1980.
