History

In 1967, American Vogue magazine published an article called “Can Great Skin Be Created?”, written by beauty editor Carol Phillips with Dr. Norman Orentriech, discussing the significance of a skin-care routine. Evelyn Lauder, daughter-in-law of Estée Lauder, read the article[1], and brought it to Estée’s attention. Both Carol Phillips and Dr. Orentreich were recruited to help create the brand, and in August, 1968, Clinique premiered as the world’s first hypo-allergenic, dermatologist-driven line at Saks Fifth Avenue.[2]

Allergy tested

Clinique tests its product for allergic reactions by applying it to 600 people 12 times, with a standard of zero reactions.[citation needed]

Skin care

Clinique's soap contains tallow and lye as the bases. There are three formulas available in North America and Europe; Extra-mild, Mild, and Oily.

Clinique also has a facial care line called CX which contains products targeted towards specialized needs, such as stretch marks associated with pregnancy.

Clinique also carries a skin care line targeted to men.

General cosmetics

Although mostly known as a skincare line, 52%[citation needed] of revenue for Clinique is derived from their makeup, 25% from foundation alone. Clinique also carries a line of makeup brushes coated with an antibacterial solution.

Fragrances

Clinique's original fragrance is Aromatics Elixir[3]. It was created in 1975 and is classified as a chypre-floral fragrance [4]. Happy, Clinique's best-selling women's fragrance, was introduced in 1997. It features notes of ruby red grapefruit, bergamot, Hawaiian wedding flower, and spring mimosa.

Clinique Medical

In 2008, Clinique announced a partnership[5] with Allergan, the maker of Botox and former cosmeceutical partner of Elizabeth Arden, with the result being a new line called Clinique Medical. The line is only available in physician's offices. The 5-product set is designed for pre- and post-operation skin care, and targets complications such as redness, tightness, burning, irritation, discoloration, among others that "slow the healing process."[6] The regimen includes a probiotic cleaner, skin conditioner, recovery complex to treat redness and discoloration, a treatment cream for lines and wrinkles, and a moisturizer with SPF 38.
