American marines from the 2nd Battalion began their Operation Strike of the Sword on 2 July, at the same time as British forces initiated Operation Panther's Claw

In 2009, coalition forces experienced the highest number of casualties since the beginning of the war in 2001. The provinces of Helmand and Kandahar were centerstage; they are the stronghold of Taliban. The two provinces were attacked for the first time by US forces in 2005, and in the beginning of 2006 troops from the United Kingdom, Canada, Holland, Denmark and Estonia arrived. In July 2006, NATO took officially charge and the forces were placed under British command. Soon the troops were involved in some of the worst fights since The Second World War. On 2 July 2009, two US battalions were deployed in the two provinces, as part of the 17,000 troop increase, that President Barack Obama had decided earlier.
