Sammye E. Coan Middle School is a public middle school located in the Kirkwood (Atlanta), community in East Atlanta. The school is one of few in the Atlanta Public School system that is located in DeKalb County.

History

Sammye E. Coan Middle School was constructed in 1965 and dedicated in 1967 as the first middle school in the state of Georgia. The school was named after Sammye E. Coan, a graduate of Spelman College, who was a renowned educator and community activist in the City of Atlanta . She taught for several years at Bell Street Elementary School and served as a principal of E.P. Johnson and Wesley Avenue elementary schools.[1]
