Cody "P-Bone" Pettibone (March 17, 1899 - February 27, 1921) was a
right fielder for the
Boston Red Sox in the 1920s.
Pettibone first played for the Red Sox in 1919 but played
first base due to the fact that the Red Sox at the time had a right fielder in
Babe Ruth.
In the off season of 1919 the Boston Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to play Pettibone at his natural position of right field.
Soon after Babe was traded, Pettibone was the starting right fielder, during which he batted .311 with 29 HRs and 98 RBIs, solid for a 21-year-old hot hitting prospect.
But then tragedy struck and the first case of the
Curse of the Bambino occurred as the rookie of the year was tragically stricken with testicular cancer.
After Pettibone's tragic death in 1921 the club decided to honer his St. Patrick's day of birth and make the shamrock the official alternate uniform for the Red Sox.
And many say shaped the idea for Boston's Basketball team the Boston Celtics.
Cody Peetibone was cremated and where his remains are is unknown at this time.
