Cognizant was founded in 1994 as an IT development and maintenance services arm of The Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. The company was spun off as an independent organization two years later. Cognizant was one of the first IT services companies to organize around key industry verticals as well as technology horizontals. It has significant practices in banking and financial services, insurance, health care and life sciences, retail, manufacturing, logistics, travel and hospitality, communications, and information, media and entertainment industries, among others.

Financial Health

Cognizant has seen year-over-year revenue growth of 16% in calendar year 2009, from $2.81 billion to $3.279 billion(USD). This growth has been realized across all industries.

Cognizant was listed on NASDAQ in 1998 and moved to the NASDAQ-100 Index in 2004. After the close of trading on 16 November 2006, Cognizant moved from the mid cap S&P 400 to the S&P 500.

Cognizant's primary competitors are Accenture, IBM, Capgemini, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro.

Other competitors include IT services companies such as Computer Sciences Corporation, Dell Perot Systems and HCL Technologies. Competitors in the Business Process Outsourcing space include Genpact and MphasiS (a division of EDS).

Offshoring and Hiring in the U.S.

Cognizant is among the top 10 companies receiving H-1B visas to bring foreign workers to the United States. The company recognizes the risk this poses to their business model.

However, the company has been increasing its U.S. work force. In August 2009, the company announced plans to hire 100 people in Phoenix.[3]

Corporate Social Responsibility

Cognizant's philanthropic efforts are conducted worldwide through the voluntary efforts of Cognizant employees and the financial and administrative support of the Cognizant Foundation. Registered in March 2005 as a "Charitable Company" under the Indian Companies Act, the Cognizant Foundation helps underprivileged members of society gain access to quality education and healthcare by providing financial and technical support; designing and implementing educational and healthcare improvement programs; and partnering with Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), educational institutions, healthcare institutions, government agencies and corporations.

Through its Project Outreach, Cognizant supports schools and orphanages through more than 400 initiatives reaching more than 200,000 children worldwide.

Cognizant's sustainability efforts include a "Go Green" initiative launched in 2008 focused on energy conservation, recycling, and responsible waste management. The company supports national and international climate change policies and protocols such as the EPA's Climate Leaders program and the Carbon Disclosure Project.
