It is the oldest college weekly in the United States.[1540] It was founded in 1869 as the Madisonesis, since the school was at that point known as Madison University.
The current name comes from the two predecessor weeklies on campus, the Colgate Maroon and the Colgate News.
The Maroon is the descendant of the Madisonesis, while the News was started in the 1960's as a more liberal alternative to the establishmentarian Maroon.
The two papers merged in the 1980s to form the Maroon-News.
The newspaper prides itself on being independent, with an all-volunteer staff (no wages, no class credit) and no supervisory control by a faculty member.
The staff manages the writing, editing, photography and financial aspects of the business.
