CommanderBond.net also known as
CBn is an unofficial
fansite dedicated to
Ian Fleming's famous British secret agent,
James Bond.
CommanderBond.net was created in 2000 by David Winter and is owned by CommanderBond.net Ltd.
It's the largest
James Bond fansite on the Internet with constantly updated news on its main page and forums with over 8,500 members.
In June 2005, CommanderBond.net launched the Internet’s first dedicated,
James Bond podcast.
2000 - 2001
Fifteen year old, Dave Winter, an avid
James Bond fan, with the help of his friend, Greg Nolle, registered the domain "commanderbond.net" on July 25, 2000.
Nolle designed the site and also developed a web application that made maintaining it easy for Winter.
New to the world of web design, Winter spent many hours learning design, layout and HTML over the next few months while adding content to the site such as film listings and character profiles.
On January 1, 2001, CommanderBond.net launched a new content management system for the site (the first version of
Content Wizard) which was written by Nolle.
The site mainly concentrated on news in 2001, however, as newscame in regarding
Die Another Day or "Bond 20" as it was known in 2001, the site was getting more and more visitors.
At this point, CBn was running on a spare server in Nolle’s loft and with the increased strain, both the server and Nolle were finding it hard to keep it running.
Due to the increased traffic, the site was getting slower and slower, to a point where it took a minute or two for anything to load.
After searching for alternatives, Winter and Nolle found a web host which offered ‘Unlimited Bandwidth' which was exactly what they were looking for.
This was the first time that they would have to pay a monthly fee for the site's hosting and Winter's parents agreed to pay.
Only a day or so after they had uploaded all of the site's files onto the new host, the host cut off Winter's account because of the strain CBn's ever growing forums put on the host.
The host told Winter and Nolle to switch to a different forum package or not use a forum at all.
CBn's forums were moved to vBulletin which required paying extra for a licence.
After hours of transfering the forum data to vBulletin, the host cut off Winter's account yet again.
This time they complained that the site was using too much bandwidth which made no sense considering the host advertised ‘Unlimited Bandwidth'.
The next move for Winter and Nolle was to switch to a server dedicated to CBn, a move that was going to cost $100 a month.
Winter was a College student at the time and had no income therefore he couldn't afford this option.
He decided to make a donation plea for CBn and with the aid of
Paypal, it was easy for people to send money to help CBn.
Winter had to set up a bank account specifically for the site as so many people sent in donations.
With these donations, Winter and Nolle were able to afford the move to their own server at Rackshack (now known as EV1servers).
Unfortunately, the server fee drained the donations quickly, forcing Winter to make a few more donation pleas in a short time period.
Raymond Benson, official continuation novelist of the
James Bond novels from 1997 to 2002, auctioned one of his short stories, with the money going towards helping CBn.
CommanderBond.net would not still be online today had its readers not donated money during this time of growth.

CBn Podcast
In June 2005, CommanderBond.net launched the Internet’s first dedicated,
James Bond podcast.
DanielCraigIsBond.com
After
Daniel Craig was announced as the sixth
James Bond, a web site was created that attempted to encourage fans to “boycot” the film.
It gave Craig critics a voice and was highly publicised by major news outlets.
The fans who supported
Daniel Craig had no consolidated place where they could voice their support of Craig and their confidence in him.
Because of that, it appeared to some as though the majority of fans didn't favor Craig as James Bond.
CBn launched,
DanielCraigIsBond.com, in 2006 to prove them wrong.
