"Committed" is the twenty first episode in the fifth season of the American crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, set in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Grissom and Sara investigate a murder of an inmate, Robbie Garson, in his own room at an institute for the criminally insane. It'd happened right after Robbie had been placed back in his room after being in seclusion. This makes interviewing the suspects particularly difficult. Most of the action takes place at the institute with Grissom leaving to observe the autopsy with Doc Robbins, in which they discover many odd items in the victim's stomach contents. Robbie appears to have died from asphyxiation. Sara and Brass discover that one of the hospital techs, Leon, has been stiffing all of the inmates' medications that have street value. They interrogate him on suspicion that he may have killed Robbie after Robbie caught him stealing medications in order to keep him from telling anyone. He denies doing this, saying Robbie had originally had a violent episode after yesterday's group therapy session with Nurse Joanne McKay, which led him to being put into seclusion.
DNA results found from semen on Robbie's bed leads them to another inmate, Adam Trent. Adam, a manic-depressive with multiple suicide attempts, had been sexually abused by his mother throughout his childhood. He admits that he is responsible for killing Robbie. A lipstick mark on Adam's underwear leads Sara and Grissom to Nurse McKay, and they go to investigate her office. As Grissom leaves the room, Adam enters and locks the door behind him, trapping Sara inside. He takes her hostage and holds a sharp ceramic piece to her neck. Grissom panics as he comes back and sees Sara and Adam, as one of the technicians fumbles to open the door. Nurse McKay comes, and Adam moves his arm to point the ceramic edge at her while screaming, giving Sara the opportunity to escape just as the office door is opened. Sara confides in Grissom that her mother was sent to a facility like this one after she'd killed Sara's father. Due to the personal connection, Sara is motivated to finish this case.
It is discovered that Nurse McKay is really Adam's mother, who had demanded Adam end his "relationship" with Robbie. When he refused, she manipulated him into having the psychotic episode during group therapy which put him in seclusion. She then murdered Robbie in his room after he had been sedated, and made Adam cover it up. Although there is not enough evidence to support her murdering Robbie, she is still arrested for charges of incest.
