The technical regulator of communications in Peru is the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, through the Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión Privada en Telecomunicaciones (OSIPTEL).

  • Main fixed lines in use: 3,413,849 (March 2009)[1].
  • Main mobile lines in use: 21,874,216 (March 2009)[2].
  • System: privatization began in 1994; adequate for most requirements. Fixed-line teledensity is about 10 per 100 persons; mobile-cellular teledensity, spurred by competition among multiple providers, has increased to about 55 telephones per 100 persons; nationwide microwave radio relay system and a domestic satellite system with 12 earth stations.
  • International: country code - 51; the South America-1 (SAM-1) and Pan American (PAN-AM) submarine cable systems provide links to parts of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and US; satellite earth stations - 2 Intelsat (Atlantic Ocean)
