History
Stalker GmbH was established in Cologne in 1991.
The first product it released was SoftBTX - a Mac-based terminal emulator
for the then very popular German BTX information system.
It was the first emulator that provided all BTX features and passed the
official compatibility tests conducted by BTX authorities.
The product was distributed by Format Verlag.
At the same time Stalker
GmbH started to release more general-purpose utilities, its PortShare/LineShare line of modem and networking tools for AppleTalk
networks.
The SCSIShare product released in 1993 was actually the first product providing "SCSI-ver network" (mostly to share
expensive SCSI Scanners over networks), long before the iSCSI protocol was even proposed.
In 1993 the company opened offices in Mill Valley, California which became Stalker's headquarters.
Stalker Software primarily
developed for the Macintosh platform and produced two legacy mail servers, CommuniGate, an integrated offices messaging system
for email, fax, pager, and voice and the Stalker Internet Mail Server (SIMS), a freeware mail server, both of which are still widely used
today.
During this time email usage was growing at an extremely fast pace.
Back in the early 1990's most legacy email servers were
capable of supporting up to 100,000 accounts which at that time was considered a very large site.
Stalker realized the market
was ripe for a robust, highly scalable mail server solution, one that would support millions of accounts effortlessly and
efficiently while still being easy on system resources.
Email was here to stay and the solutions for the future needed to be
flexible, robust, and extremely scalable.
The company's flagship product - the CommuniGate Pro communication server has become
the acknowledged leader in scalable E-mail messaging and collaboration, running on more than 30 major computer platforms.
