From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Commuter village is a type of commuter settlement or bedroom community that sits in a rural area, formerly inhabited by people who worked in, or who had worked in, the village or close to it, now inhabited mainly by people who travel to work in a nearby town.

The term was originally applied to historic villages around London and Manchester. In the United Kingdom there are very strict planning laws to retain their village-like character and to prevent them being swallowed up by the suburbs.

Such exurbs are regarded as very desirable places to live, with correspondingly high property prices, although they are often satirised as offering a "faux-rural" lifestyle for middle-aged urban professionals.
