Contra is an arcade game developed by Konami in 1987. You play as one of the two soldiers, Lance and Bill, to take down the alien invasions. While the game was successful in the arcades and was ported to several home systems, it is best known for the NES version, which features some changes to gameplay and splits the final stage into four separate stages.
Contra isn't "toss-the-controller-against-the-wall" difficult, nor is it easy. It actually has a good balance of difficulty that doesn't have very many cheap points that require a good deal of luck — this game is all about skill…and memorization, but mostly skill. The European NES version was named Probotector and changed the human heroes into robots due to censorship laws in some countries that would have restricted the game to people over eighteen.[1]
The Japanese Famicom Contra had better graphics and sound than the NES version. For example, the title screen in the Japanese version was animated and the screen between stages resembles the scrolling map in Ghosts 'n Goblins. Many of the stages also had improved or animated sections that enhanced the game play.
Contra was ported as Gryzor to the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64 by Ocean Software for their release in Europe in 1988, with the Commodore 64 version also being released as Contra in North America by Konami. On November 8, 2006 an Xbox Live Arcade port was released. This was the arcade version and included both original and arranged modes of play, as well as achievements.

Contra is a 1987 arcade shooting video game. The player tries to balance the terrorist organization Red Falcon from taking over the planet Earth.
Either Bill or Lance is chosen. The player has a rifle with no limit to the number of times it can shoot. However, the player dies right when an enemy shoots.
The game has ten stages. For each stage, the player must shoot out the sensors before moving on. A player has 3 lives, and when all of them are lost, the game ends. In the arcade version, the player can continue a few times.
There are three types of stages:
Most stages are side-scroller stages, though Contra stages follow a basic pattern.
