  • 'Killitary' Controversy

On July 19th, 2007, Corey Mitchell posted an essay entitled 'Killitary' on In Cold Blogger, a true crime blog that he is editor of, and the Daily Kos. The essay caused great controversy in both leftwing and rightwing political circles where it was thought to denegrate the United States armed forces personnel. Within hours the post was removed from both Daily Kos and In Cold Blogger. The essay was reposted on In Cold Blogger the next day, but the article still remains absent from the Daily Kos, and can only be found in http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/7/19/1128/32072 Google's cache.

The following explanation precedes the article on In Cold Blogger:

"I decided to repost this after being excoriated by both left- and right-wing blogs. After speaking with various military personnel who read this post they assured me that it is very obvious and clear what I was getting at. The military trains people to kill and some of our men and women return home and don't receive the proper care to deal with the horrors of war or even the intensity of training. Not a single one of them thought I was trying to smear the soldiers or call them serial killers. They thanked me for pointing out a serious problem that gets overlooked by the military and needs to be dealt with."

Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs noted that the 'Killitary' article references another article, The Other War: Iraq Vets Bear Witness, which is written by Chris Hedges and Laila Al-Arian, daughter of convicted Palestinian Islamic Jihad conspirator, Sami Al-Arian. It is also noted, ironically, that in an interview with Corey Mitchell on USA Today's onDeadline blog, that the article "was pro-soldier all the way."
