Corpus Juris Society is a secret society at The Dickinson School of Law, 5th oldest law school in the United States. This society was created in the early 20th Century, and while it's membership is secret, several influential jurists are rumored to be members. Due to its mainly “underground” nature, little is known about the Organization as it currently exists, and even less is known about its origins. What is known is as follows: membership increases by an equal amount of males and females (rumored to be ten of each) every semester; new members are always second-year students (or "Middlers" in DSL vernacular), chosen by third-year (AKA "Seniors") students; once inducted, an individual remains a member for life. While there is much speculation and sometimes criticism regarding CJS membership, members are chosen by secret ballot and most members are chosen based upon their involvement in student activities such as Student Bar Association and various Law Reviews. Usually the most outgoing students become members. Any additional information concerning the Organization is usually speculative. Despite some criticism of the group for it's secrecy and selectivity, the group is anything but clandestine in its purpose, and provides a fun, social outlet for the rigors of the Penn State DSL law program. It is likely that the Corpus Juris Society will remain one of the Dickinson School of Law’s most closely guarded, and highly respected, secrets.
