The Cortlandt Town Center (formerly known as the Westchester Mall) is a large retail power center located in the town of Cortlandt, New York (Mohegan Lake ZIP code). The New York Times called it "the main shopping area of the town of Cortlandt Manor" in 2003.[1] The current incarnation (and name) was founded (reopened) in 1997 from the vacant and partially demolished buildings that made up the Westchester Mall, a mostly enclosed dead mall (itself founded in 1975). Many new buildings were added as well, and it is currently a predominatly outdoor shopping center, eventually growing to approximately 772,000 square feet.[2] Anchor stores include Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Marshalls, A&P, Barnes & Noble, and there are several smaller stores as well. It contains a 12-screen movie theatre, a few clothing stores, and several restaurants as well.

The Cortlandt Town Center, located on US 6 in Mohegan Lake, New York, is composed of a series of strip malls containing over 40 stores.

History

The Westchester Mall opened in 1977 and was anchored by a Jamesway, an Alexander's, a Pergament Home Centers, a Waldbaum's, a Frank's Nursery & Crafts, and United Artists Theatres. By 1992, Alexander's had closed down, followed by Jamesway in 1995. Soon after, in 1997, the remaining stores (minus Frank's) closed and construction began on the new Cortlandt Town Center.

The shopping center opened piece by piece in 1997 and 1998. McDonalds and the movie theater are the only two "big name" businesses left from the original Westchester Mall. A Frank's Nursery & Crafts was also an original store in the center, but it closed in 2004 after the company filed for bankruptcy, and has since been replaced with a larger building holding a Best Buy store, which opened in early 2006. The Jo-Ann Fabrics store closed in late January 2007, and Cardsmart closed in mid-February 2007. This was done to make way for a new Michaels store, which began construction in July 2007. [836]

Although the complex is fairly new, it has already seen its fair share of changes. A Linens 'n Things replaced a HomePlace store not long after the center moved in. The Levitz Furniture store occupies a space formerly taken by a Seaman's Furniture store, and before that, a Steinbach store. A Marty's Shoes has now become a Payless ShoeSource, which moved from the nearby Beach Shopping Center, a Nathan's Famous fast food restaurant, and the restaurant Piazza Roma replaced Pasta Plus, which closed in 2004.

Along with the major retailers located here, there are many smaller businesses as well, including a liquor store, an Italian restaurant called Piazza Roma, and a United States Post Office for Mohegan Lake (10547).

The newest additions to the center are the Bombay Company, Cold Stone Creamery, and Best Buy.

The Town Center, as many locals refer to it as, is a New Plan property.
