The Council on Competitiveness is an American non-profit organization based
in Washington,
D.C. The Council’s goal is to increase the United States'
economic competitiveness in the global
marketplace. The Council also works to bring high-value
economic activity into the United States.[1]
The Council works to facilitate the debate on competitiveness by
bringing together business, labor, academic and government leaders to evaluate economic
challenges and opportunities. This is accomplished through the
sponsorship of conferences, seminars, and other special events used
to develop new ideas and solutions and to circulate the Council’s
findings. The Council makes recommendations that are presented to
experts, government officials, media, policy makers, and the
general public.[1][2][3][4][5]
History
The Council on Competitiveness was founded in 1986 by the Chairman of President Ronald Reagan's
Commission on Industrial Competitiveness, John A. Young.[6] The
current chairman is Charles O. Holliday, CEO of DuPont.[7] The
Council on Competitiveness has had seven chairmen as of 2009.[8]
Programs
Several initiatives are sponsored by the Council. Examples of
these include the ongoing Energy Security, Innovation and
Sustainability (ESIS) Initiative, which addresses concerns
involving global energy supplies,[9] and the
National Innovation Initiative, which reviewed growth and
development in the areas of talent, investment, and infrastructure,
factors important to maintaining the position of the United States
as one of the world's leading innovators.[10] The
Council also prepares and publishes the Competitiveness Index,
which tracks performance and competitiveness indicators for the
United States and global economies.[11]
