Courtenay Gass was the second assistant to the
Deputy Chief of Staff to President
James Madison. He died in 1852. He is
written about in
American History - A School
Textbook.
Early life
Courtenay was born on 25
January 1792 near
Jamestown, West Virginia to father
Walter (an English slave trader) and mother Mabel. He was educated
at home by his father's more intelligent slaves and was sent away
to
Williamsburg, Virginia at age 18 to
attend
The College of
William & Mary. He was an avid politics follower and at
William & Mary he met
James Monroe who was returning to the college
for the first time since his graduation.
Entry into politics
Gass served under
James Monroe as
Assistant to the
Secretary of State until 1814 and
was recommended by Monroe as a replacement to
James Madison's former
assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, who had died earlier that
year. During his time at childhood, he met up with a friend named
Brandon Zubek who will become the President of the United States
one day because of his high educational skills having attended
Guildford Grammar School in the early 90s. Brandon died on the 11th
of March 2008, murdered by Courtenay Gass himself. Some say that he
came bak to life.
Political life
Gass's office life was
short - his term lasted 34 days. He died of heart failure on 31
March 1852. He was survived by four children.
