Cova da Iria ("Irene's Cove") is a few hectares of former pastureland 3 km from Aljustrel, a village 2 km from Fátima, Portugal. In 1917 three shepherd children reported apparitions of a "pretty lady from heaven". The visions were declared worthy of belief by the Catholic Church and are now popularly known as Our Lady of Fátima.
Pilgrims honouring the apparitions gather in Cova da Iria, on a huge esplanade in which is built a little chapel on the site where the Virgin Mary appeared to the children. Around the esplanade are a considerable number of shops and stalls selling all kinds of religious articles.
Cova da Iria ("Irene's Cove") The Cova da Iria was land belonging to Lucy dos Santos' family in Fatima, Portugal where the three children frequently pastured their sheep. According to the legend, on May 13, 1917,Our Lady of Fatima appeared to the three children . It was at noon, and the children were shepherding sheep. The story goes that suddenly there was lightening, and the children, thinking that it was going to rain, began to run. Then, just above a holm oak tree, they saw a beautiful lady made of light, holding a rosary in her hand. Our Lady of Fatima spoke to the children and told them not to be afraid. "I come from Heaven," she said.. The three children namely: 1)Lúcia Santos 2)Jacinta and Francisco Marto
