Artist Information

Is he an artist? Is he an activist? Or is he just another crazy hippie leftist? Did you hear about his secret army? Have you seen his phony, anti-american cash?

Craig Poirier is something of an angry artist lost in a utopian dream. He’s lashing out at capitalism, war, poverty, police brutality, power, and those damned polluting cars. Poirier is a regular attendee of protests, activist meetings and other such rebel gatherings. Not one to totally give up on the state, he spent last spring shadowing the federal NDPs official election campaign with his own provocative spray paint posters to encourage young voters. His posters were successfully distributed in Toronto, Peterborough, and Ottawa, Ontario. His fake bills litter the streets of many cities, from Bangkok to Berlin, and his spray-painted posters are a friendly, non-destructive means of graffiti.

After struggling to have his work exhibited Poirier decided to trade in his high moralist views on free anarchic education and enrolled in visual arts at York University. Two years later he transferred to the University of Ottawa to work in a more intimate environment. In 2003 Poirier became a founding member of NomadGallery.ca an, art gallery dedicated to bringing art to the pubic by using public spaces in any given community.

Recently, Poirier has been executing dramatic modernist abstract paintings and then defacing them with stencilled images and slogans. The repertoire of images extends from the typical punk rock skull (embracing doom and despair) to other familiar revolutionary icons (Che Guevara, Castro, & Trotsky to name a few). This recent work is informed by years of silk-screening and more dubious stencilled, spray-painted pieces. In the near future, Poirier aims to display his second generation of riot cop piñatas. If you’re lucky, you may get to smash one up.

Poirier continues to paint, teach, rabble rouse and spew revolutionary dribble in the City of Ottawa.
