Crumax is a little known
experimental electronic sound and music creation based outfit which
started in England, 1973. Originally a collective of inquisitive
sound engineers obsessed with creating new soundscapes with all
manner of wave oscillation equipment, they devised a niche for
themselves by the inventive use of acoustic chambers, spring
reverberators, analog tape based effects and early digital delay
lines. By the insistence of founding member Raymond
Wright, analog synthesizers were later adopted and thus
the primitive (and unwieldy) wave generators permanently
replaced.
Exponents of 'medium-fi', their sound was largely
semi-industrial (other fringe styles were explored) to raw ambient
in nature. The emphasis was to create 'melodic rhythmic structures'
and it is in this that the band succeeded. They were always
striving for a complete fusion of melody and rhythm, right up to
the point where the harmonies and beats were seemlessly merged into
a cohesive whole.
Their style of recording was odd as it was
inconsistent, ranging from the near monophonic to hard panned
left/right stereo for greater sound separation and spatial
enhancement. They always claimed that their 'wavescapes' were
designed for speaker systems and not headphone listening purposes.
Despite their music being instrumental, they were (and still are) a
band with a strange message and this is reflected in the mysterious
and some would say ambiguous, track titles.
After the passing
of Ray Wright in December 2002 his progeny took over the musical
production helm for a short period, but Crumax soon appointed a new
co-leader in the form of Muzaffar Baqai who gave
the overall team a much needed stability and direction.
Crumax
still exists today in one guise or another, the latest information
being that it is now fronted primarily by engineers Darrell
Noon and Mark Wright. With new audio
creations in the pipeline and a planned internet radio station to
air all the group's completed works, these unassuming musical
innovators may have finally come of age to a more deserved audience
and time.
