Crystal Castles is an arcade game released by Atari in 1983. It was released long after the stigma of appearing like a Pac-Man clone had worn off. It began development as a much different game, a variant of the Asteroids theme that would retain the 3D look that Crystal Castles ended up with. Much of the ideas for that game (intended to be called Toporoids) ended up in a different game, I, Robot, which was the first arcade game ever to contain filled 3D polygons. Crystal Castles became a more whimsical title, that also contained a number of arcade firsts, including a back-lit translucent track ball.
Bentley Bear lives in a world of tree-dimensional perspective similar to that found in Q*Bert or Zaxxon, and he's the main character in what was one of Atari's most inventive games. Bentley's duty is to clear away all of the gems that cover the surface of each of the mazes, using elevators and ramps to cross between higher and lower portions of the mazes. While picking up the gems, Bentley must avoid Gem Eaters, Nasty Trees, Crystal Balls, and a wicked witch.
Only a little over 5000 units were ever produced for the arcade, including a wonderfully decorated upright cabinet, and a much rare cocktail version. Due to the games appearance right around the time when the home video game market was crashing, Crystal Castles did not see as wide a variety of home conversions as it might have, appearing primarily on Atari systems, but making it's way to other popular home computers, courtesy of Atarisoft.
Once upon a time there lived a bear named Bentley
Who wandered o'er the land in search of fortune plenty.
Picnic baskets and such were not his bill of fare.
Only ruby gemstones could content this clever bear.
While roaming the lands of Crystal Castles,
Bentley gathered his jewels with the greatest of care.
A snatch here and there by a swift paw or two
Showered fame and fortune on this rarest of bears!

Crystal Castles is an arcade game released in 1983. It was ported to the Atari 2600 and Atari 8-bit computer systems.
On this game, the player controls Bentley Bear, the teddy bear who must go to each of the Crystal Castles and harvest the magic gems while avoiding evil creatures that lurk about.
Use the trackball to move Bentley Bear around the paths of the various "castles" and pick up gems. A level is completed when all the gems are picked up either by you or the gem eaters. If you get the last gem, you will receive extra bonus points.
Kill the gem eaters only when you can see them swallowing a gem. Jumping over the trees will shrink and disable them temporarily. Wearing Berthilda's hat temporarily grants you invincibility and allows you to kill the witch if you can catch her. Other creatures such as the balls, skeletons, and ghosts must be avoided. The pot of honey can be eaten for extra points, but watch out for the swarm of bees.
The arcade game original uses a trackball for maneuvering Bentley Bear. The home versions are mostly relegated to using a joystick or a D-pad as a substitute, and thus are considered inferior alternatives.
One of the few games out there that actually ends. Also the fact that the game has no attract sound is made up by the fact that the game has one of the best looking cabinets ever produced. The machine also sports a red lighted trackball that blinks.
