Background:
Known mostly
for his extremely unorthodox, up beat recording style, Christopher
"CUE TRAX" Gittens was born in New Jerzy. His earliest memories
stem from a place called Patchog Long Island, where his parents
separated forcing him to make a decision between going with his
pregnant Mother (Pansy Gittens) and second oldest brother (Lance
Gittens) to Staten Island or with his father (Oddleton Gittens) and
oldest brother (Orin Gittens) at an early age.
Being that his
closest bond was with his preceding kin he opted to stay with
mother and closest brother Lance. His father moved to Florida to be
with his future wife (Sandy Gittens), his oldest son (Orin), and
first-born daughter (Tersha Gittens).
Meanwhile, Pansy struggled
to pay the bills in the house, which was left behind to her in the
divorce. Anticipating an addition (first born daughter Candace
Gittens) in her now broken family, Pansy searched for a better
tomorrow. After turning to family members and "close friends" she
eventually sought refuge with a new found friend named Mike
Mitchell on the Island of Staten (New York), where she would have
the time to nurture her new born take care of her two sons and go
to Drake business School to salvage the scraps of her life that was
left behind.
Pansy's spent most of her time on the development of
her second born son (now man of the house) Lance Gittens was
extremely gifted in many areas but he excelled (much like his
father) in Track & Field. He quickly demanded respect all over
the nation with his lightning fast abilities. In High School Lance
played varsity football, ran Track and still managed to keep an 80
gpa. His family supported him every step of the way attending track
meets, ceremonial dinners and other school functions. In his senior
year he was the topic of discussion, in the hallways, in the Staten
Island Advance, and all throughout NYC. Under the direction of
Coach Bastion (former Staten Island All star Basket Ball player
gone track coach) the two worked together to fine-tuned Lances
skills in the areas of; the Intermediate hurdles and the 400m
sprints.
Coach Pete Squires (track coach and scout) of Farleigh
Dickerson University attended a championship Track & Field
competition, at which point he saw and discovered lance in action.
Lance went on to get a full scholarship at Farleigh Dickerson
University in Teaneck NJ straight out of Port Richmond High
School.
After the F.D.U. KNIGHT broke countless NEC records, he
re-united with his father creating a winning combination of
strategic planning, drive and talent. With his father as his
Olympic coach, it didn’t take much persuasion to move his career as
a great athlete forward. Their combined efforts landed Lance on
Guyaneese soil to begin training in his first Olympic games. Being
that Guyana is a relatively pour country, the tryouts for their
Olympic team was (sadly) on a dusty old track fully equipped with
weeds growing on the sidelines and a scorching hot sun magnified by
the clay sediments synonymous with South American terrain. Needless
to say all of the training Lance had in the States assured him a
seat on their Olympic team.
Lance Gittens went on to representing
His Native Country "GUYANA" in the 1996 Olympics hosted in Atlanta
Georgia Where he resides today.
Aside from becoming an
“International Athlete”, Lance attained a few more achievements
along the way. He attained his Masters in Social Sciences at Wagner
Collage in Staten Island, became a New York State board of
Education certified teacher, a licensed physical trainer in the
state of Florida and for his honorable achievements both foreign
& domestic; maintains Dual Citizenship in Guyana and the United
States till this day.
“Watching my brother on Channel 5, walking
around the track with the Guyaneese flag in front of him and the GT
green jacket draped across his soldiers made me so proud I cried. I
was at an away track meet in a hotel during the summer with a team
that was run by the Black Family. I still remember my teammates
running through the hotel screaming your brothers on TV your
brothers on TV. That moment changed me inside, It was clear what I
had to do, become great like my brother” –Christopher
Gittens-
Christopher followed in much of his brother’s footsteps.
Although he wasn’t as fast as his brother, his abilities to jump
were matched by only an elite few. While dating his high school
sweetheart he was know to show off his talents by jumping over a
small car or two. His senior year he took all of the Curtis High
records in his area of expertise of jumping. “I figured my brother
had jumping on a smash I’ma take over the field” said Christopher
to Staten Island Advance Reporter Derik ______ after a
competition.
