Cuusoo.com is a pioneer Internet-based open community that attempts to commercialize product ideas from consumers. Ideas and concept designs for new products are collected from their members. The best designs are put to the vote and the winning design is sold to potential producers for mass production. In theory, the potential marketability of the winning design seems ensured because it is consumer driven and supported.[613]

Origins and early history

Cuusoo.com is owned by a Tokyo-based company called Eelephant Design. The company is founded in 1997 by Nishiyama Kehei, who is the inventor of the Design to Order (DTO) system and a member of Good Design Award [614] juries.

Business Concept

Elephant design promotes the development and production of innovative products, designed to meet individuals needs and preferences in various industries.

Conventional marketing & mass production can not respond to individual`s wishes and preferences. Consequently, users are unable to purchase what they really need, as their choices in buying new items are limited.

As a result, companies are engaged in high marketing costs for new products, but often fail to meet customers true needs or even have no market to match their investment.

Design To Order (DTO)

`Design To Order` (DTO) technology encourages individual users to express their needs as consumers and take part in developing ideal products based on personal requirements.

By Integrating Individual users into the product innovation process, companies can gain access to individuals needs and wishes in advance and thus avoid costly product failures.

This technology enables the virtual reality of endless opportunities on the web, to become our everyday lifestyle achieving what we really need.

Usage

Cuusoo.com is a virtual market place which was launched in 1999 and currently holds 20,000 users making wishes regarding their desired products.

Out of an original 120 customer-proposed design, 20 received enough orders to be manufactured and are available now for purchase. Another 7,000 ideas posted by website visitors are waiting to be designed.
