Dan Blonsky is a Miami attorney and the second game-show contestant to win the $1 million grand prize on "
Who Wants to be a Millionaire."
In contrast to the first winner, John Carpenter, who came off as conceited and arrogant in his victory three months earlier, Blonsky joked about having to bring his mother along to the taping because he didnt have much of a social life.
This started a trend where young single men would get escorted by their mothers in hopes of going on to win the Grand Prize.
In fact, nearly half (4 of 9) of the million dollar winners on the primetime version were single men escorted by their mothers.
A Globe tabloid article even labeled Blonsky a "loser in love".
Some of the questions Blonsky answered regarded
Betty Ford's CB radio nickname (First Mama), and the who was on the first cover feature in People Magazine (
Mia Farrow), a question which Blonsky answered with the help from a law partner using the Phone-a-Friend lifeline.
The $1 million question asked for the distance between the earth and the sun, and he chose the correct answer of 93,000,000 miles.
In subsequent interviews, Blonsky said that he invested $800,000 of his winnings in the stock market, which was peaking at the time.
The
dot com bubble began to burst not long after his victory, so if his statement is true, he has potentially lost a substantial portion of his winnings.
