Dane Jensen (Milwaukee, 1976) is an American curator of fine art and a professional in the fine arts industry living in Los Angeles, CA.

History

Dane Jensen was born in Milwaukee on February 18, 1976. He is the son of Barbara Jensen and CEO Ronald Jensen (who is married to Patricia Woertz.

As a child, Dane Jensen had an artistic talent and won several drawing competitions. After graduating from Libertyville High School in 1994 he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While he began in the Interior Design program he switched his major to Art History and graduated in 1999.

In 1999, he began his professional career in sales for the Martin Lawrence Galleries[1520] which carried works by artists including Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

In 2003, Jensen joined a team working with Amnesty International on exhibition “Beyond Graffiti”. The exhibition drew attention to the women in Juarez, Mexico who have died as a result of violent crimes. Four talented graffiti artists came together to work on a project to collaborate on a monumental 30-foot canvas. The show garnered a significant amount of national media attention. Actress Taryn Manning and actress and activist Selma Hayek lent their support to the show in support of an end to the violence against women in Juarez.

The same year Jensen became Director of the Earl McGrath Gallery Los Angeles. At the Earl McGrath gallery, [1521] Jensen handled works by artists such as Mark Ryden and Bruce Nauman. While at the Earl McGrath Gallery the gallery mounted significant exhibitions such as “Raising the Brow”, a seminal exhibtion of some of the the most important and influential artists of the “low brow" or Pop Surrealist art movement.

Noteworthy shows as an independent curator include "$coundrels,” which was shown at the Venice Contemporary[1522] of Venice, CA May of 2007. The exhibition emphasized the parallels between contemporary scandals and corruption in big business to those occurrying at the end of the 19th century’s. Influencial 19th Century illustrators such as Thomas Nast, were cited stylistically in many of the works by artists. The artists chosen by Jensen such as Eric White, Bob Dob, and Andrew Foster were selected for their strong throwback illustrative style. Central to the theme Jensen conceived for "$coundrels" was the idea that despite the diminished voice of the contemporary print media today, today’s illustrators still have remain a strong presence in the world of fine art. Through this new expression the artists emphasized the repetition and similarities of of big business scandals like that of Enron to the corrupt tactics of businesses during Nast’s time.

Jensen is currently curating, Eye of the Storm an exhibition featuring contemporary combat photography by enlisted photographers in the United States Armed Forces. Jensen assembled decorated combat photographers who photographed military action while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. These photographers donated their photographs to help support the Wounded Warrior Project[1523]. 100% of the proceeds from the show will go toward aiding injured combat soldiers. "Eye of the Storm aims to shed light on the multi-faceted perspective of war from the viewpoint of enlisted serviceman and woman. "Eye of the Storm" will be shown at the Reform Gallery[1524] with an opening receptioin Memorial Day weekend on Saturday May 24, 2008.

In July of 2007, Dane Jensen joined the sales team for the renowned Moss Gallery[1525], owned by Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell, at their new gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Moss is based in New York, NY and is an internationally known and respected gallery specializing in limited edition and rare contemporary studio design from influential international desigers. Moss gallery also participated in the popular Art Basel show in 2007.

Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm, a fine art exhibition, is born out of a need to help people Jensen’s age or younger who face mental and physical injuries from combat. In his opinion, there are news reports that focus on the body count of soldiers who die in combat but not enough is focused on the injured soldiers coming home. There are also Iraq refugees who are rarely discussed in the media. The photographs of these Iraq refugees are seen through the eyes of the servicemen and women. Jensen’s motivation for “Eye of the Storm” is to bring the war to light.

The limited-edition photographs are being released from the Department of Defense and these same pictures have been displayed globally. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Russell Lee Klika is a self-taught photojournalist and his poignant photographs have been included in many popular news magazines. Cherie Thurlby is the first female photographer to lead a female team through Baghdad. U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Michael Watkins had his highly sensitive photographs portrayed on prominent television networks. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Stacy L. Pearsall has received a bronze star for her efforts in Iraq and in 2003 won the NPPA Military Photographer of the year. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jacob Bailey has 100 of his photographs used in international photo agencies. U.S. Marine Cpl. Samuel Corum at only 23 years old has his unique work published in reputable magazines. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Mike Pryor has recently won FOSCOM Military Journalist of the Year 2007. Air Force Master Sgt.
