Dark Signs is a
freeware computer game originally created and released in 2003 by
Australian developer Jeremy Stride.
In 2006, development of the project was handed over to Vectra Media, a freeware development organisation, managed by
British developer Ross Bearman.
Concept
The Dark Signs game environment is primarily set within a
command line interface (CLI) whereby the player must type commands through the computer keyboard in order to complete mission objectives.
DarkSigns simulates a virtual network where common goals include finding target computer servers, searching for information, and running exploits to obtain access to virtual computer servers.
Features
One of the most attractive features of Dark Signs lies in the games builtin
scripting language, making it an instant success with many.
DScript gives players the option of creating their own command scripts which can then be run and processed by the system console.
This allows players to essentially create their own command line interface programs.
A common example of a command script would be a target scanner, a fast way to find potential targets on the network.
DScript has a few weaknesses however, such as an inability to nest
if statements.
The developers have promised to overcome the nested if issue in later versions.
