----

The Darlington School is a coeducational, Kindergarten through Twelfth grade private day school and Ninth through Twelfth grade boarding school located in south Rome, Georgia. It has often been referred to as the "Future KA's of America" club.

History

----

Since its founding, Darlington has gone through many transformations. First, Darlington merged with the Thornwood school and allowed girls to attend. In the 1960's and 1970's, the drug culture hit America and Darlington was a beacon for this phenomenon. Hippies from all over the country were sent from their homes to board at Darlington and the reputation of the "druggie dorm student" was born. In the late 1980's, practically the entire dorm student population was heavily invloved with the drug culture. Several teachers would note that their entire classes would be completely stoned during class. Dorm students would open their windows and smoke marijuana before attending class. Almost an entire hall of girls was cought tripping on acid and were expelled. The school administration began cracking down on drug use demanding a drug test for admittance to school and programs to ensure that students were not drug users. Still, the druggie dorm student stereotype remained. At a school sanctioned event on campus in the late 1990's, drugs could be smelled inside the croud of students even though teachers were around. Drugs continue to exist at Darlington--the school whose students are best described by the phrase: "private school hippies".[1]
