His role
musically in Funeral For A Friend is that of rhythm guitar. He
usually accompanies band mate and fellow guitarist Kris
Coombs-Roberts with power chord laden riffs while Kris tends to
play lead
guitar, although it is unknown whether this is due to Darran
preferring to play rhythm guitar or that Kris writes the lead parts
due to a natural writing style in the band. He does, however,
occasionally stray from his normal position and plays lead guitar, for instance in
the 2005 single, Streetcar where he demonstrated
advanced guitar skills such as tapping.
His guitar skills are also thought to be
better than let on in his Funeral role as he recorded both guitar
parts in a cover song of Metallica's Damage Inc., even playing the
notoriously difficult guitar solos.
He tends to favor PRS guitars, particularly the
double cut away Custom 22 model with either an Emerald Green or
Blue Matteo Quilted Maple Top.
