Andrew Hill was born in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Bellevue, Washington at the age of five.
He attended
Sammamish High School and participated in the school band and student leadership.
David is the brother of
James T.
Hill of the band
Surrounded By Lions.
David moved in 2001 to study biology at
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where his research focoused on protein processing.
After graduating, David acted as a post-baccalaureate IRTA fellow at the
National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland,
United States of America.
He is known for his studies of nutrient acquisition pathways in
Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite which causes
malaria.
While at the NIH David studied an essential ion channel in
Plasmodium falciparum called the Plasmodial Surface Anion Channel (PSAC).
This important ion channel has been recognized as an exciting new target for anti-malarial development, garnering high-level funding from the
Medicines for Malaria Venture.
The unique functional properties of this channel suggest that PSAC is not related to human ion channels.
PSAC is of interest to scientists and physicians as an exciting new drug and vaccine target.
David Hill is currently a MD/PhD degree student at the
University of Pennsylvania.
