David Ashe was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1968. He grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia and then attended Virginia Tech. After graduation he moved to Washington, DC and attended the District of Columbia School of Law as well as the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, from which in 1996 he was commissioned a second lieutenant. One year later he finished law school and passed the bar.

From 1999 until September 2001, Ashe provided legal services for Marines. Immediately following the September 11, 2001 attacks he drove to New York City and served in the bucket brigade rescue team. Two weeks later Ashe was recalled to active duty, where he was eventually assigned to Operation Enduring Freedom in Kuwait. From March 2003 until October 2003, Ashe was deployed in Iraq.

David Ashe ran an unsuccesful campaign for a U.S. Congress seat in Virginia's VA-02 as a Democrat. He lost to Republican Thelma Drake who stepped into the race after incumbent Ed Schrock suspended his re-election bid.

David Ashe plans to run again against Thelma Drake in the 2006 election for the same seat.
