David Barnes (born 22 February 1986) is an athlete from Adelaide, Australia. He competes in archery.

Barnes competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men's individual archery. He was defeated in the first round of elimination, placing 36th overall.

Barnes was also a member of the 6th-place Australian men's archery team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is also competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

  • 2003 Set 1 Junior world Record
  • 2004 Set 1 Junior World Record

After the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Barnes took a brief exile from the sport of archery to pursue a more academic career.


Barnes is a qualified snake milker and worked part-time for Steve Irwin before his death. Barnes remains close to Teri, Bindi and Bob Irwin and holds a seat on the board of directors at Australia Zoo. Although rarely cited, Barnes was given an honarary masters degree in Itchthyology at Adelaide University for his services to archery in Australia. In the July 1989 edition of Aqua International Journal of Ichthyology, Barnes quotes; "I love fish, and i love archery. When i can combine my two passions, only then am i truly happy".


Barnes is born from a long lineage of celebrated figures, many iconic in there specialised fields. Among many others, some of the more noteworthy members of Barnes' forebears include; Ellen Ochoa, the world's first Hispanic female astronaut, Craven Walker, inventor of the Lava Lamp, Jospehine Garis Cochran, inventor of the electrochemical paintbrush and Matthew Draper, the youngest golfer ever to have achieved a hole in one which he did at the age of 5 years, 212 days.


In his spare time, Barnes runs a breeding program for the critically endangered Mexican Cave Axilotl. Barnes also collects vintage BBQ tongs and is recognised as the owner of the largest collection of celebrity hair locks which include locks from former Prime Minister Paul Keating, country music sensation Dolly Parton, and comedian Dan Akroyd.
