Official
Biography Producer:“David Morose” Born and raised in
Vancouver,B.C. David Morose a producer also known as “Dmutate”
exploded on to the punk scene in the late 80's early 90’s with the
self produced record "Everything thats dead Quivers" by the
Invalids . This recording marks an underground production style
that would stay with him even today. The early records he produced
under the name Black Island and this era was definetly inspired by
the production of Steve Albini (Big Black). The transition to
producer from musician was a natural process, states Morose"I
started recording and making records because the studios around the
city were ripping everyone off. They were making records that
sucked in my opinion. For me thats not what writing songs and
making records should be about and I wanted to change that. I have
always felt that you make a record because you have something to
say and if you dont have anything to say then say nothing."
Profound and unbounded would describe his early work although alot
of the projects were definetly on the Low-budget end of recording a
fire was started around a handful of artists and producers and the
attitude was taken on that you could D.I.Y. and with great results
if you meant it and had a message that people believed in. "In the
beginning of recording writing I wanted to make noise and
distortion and my approach was sometimes diabolical and mainly
angry. I like songs now even in the most untraditional form. I like
arrangements that make sense to the listener being even interested
in the song in the first place. Then inside of that space inside of
the arrangment is where we can express a message a point or a
reason ." "To get a real performance from the people we worked
with on early industrial music we messed with mental torture and
even physical at times it seemed alright at the time . We were
trying to make something real and get out of our skin and be
somehow more alive. When we did scream tracks it sounded like
someone was dying to the neighbors they thought we were killing
people in the warehouse next door to them. They called the police
more than once but no one really died there." " I have always felt
you make a record because you cant help it, the expressing that is.
To be an important recording you really have to have something to
say and its gotta be said, sang, rapped whatever that makes sense
to me otherwise I would say to any artist to go home and
rethink." -David Morose
