At the age of 18, David
Newman began a life long commitment to his art. He is an abstract
expressionist painter with a classic sense of composition and a
passion for color and texture. Largely self-taught, David immersed
himself early on in an intense study of past masters, and even now
into his seventies, he still paints every day. His brilliant and
fascinating career stretches more than six decades and incorporates
media ranging from marble to bronze, oils on canvas, watercolors,
ink, pencil and pastels. His works range in size from miniature
watercolors and oils to 13-foot murals.
Over the years, Newman
has completed many commissioned works, as well as numerous gallery
and museum exhibitions. These include a commission of 34 bronze
busts to honor the founders of a new wing of The Mount Sinai
Hospital in Miami Beach, in addition to gallery shows at
the Norton Gallery of Art, Palm Beach Florida and the Sindin
Gallery, NYC. Corporate Directors from large Fortune 500 firms have
purchased his collections for their offices, and The New York
Museum of Modern Art has catalogued his works. In 2001
Schlumberger, purchased 10 pieces for their Austin Campus
including four large Murals.
During David's most current period,
he has explored a variety of themes including the Reflections, the
Improvs and the Dots series. Although varied in style from the
geometric to the abstract, a unifying thread of bold color, rich
texture and dynamic energy defines this period. With the
everlasting devotion and support of his partner, model, muse and
wife, Michele, David's creative itinerary continues to reveal a
constant evolution with moments of shifting perspective, interests
and approaches, producing a rich and multiform opus.
David
Newman died Saturday, November 12, 2005.
