deCarta, a provider of premier software for powering location-based services, was founded in 1996 based on a unique (now patented) technology for managing spatial data.
Between 1996 and 2000, with the help of customers such as ATX and BMW Research and investors such as Trimble Navigation, deCarta developed the technology into a high-performance software platform the Drill Down ServerTM (DDS) for real-time, location-based services, such as vehicle navigation and emergency response centers.
In early 2001 the Company closed $23M in funding from corporate investors to enhance its products for location-based services in the Telematics, Wireless, and Web Portal markets.
Over the next two years, the DDS was enhanced to support mobile devices for customers such as Motorola and Pharos, to enable European location-based services for customers such as ComRoad and Hutchison 3G, and to sustain performance and reliability under very high transaction volumes (maps and routes) for customers such as Yahoo! and Rand McNally.
In 2002, the company acquired the assets of Gravitate, and developed an industry-first product (Traffic Manager) for integrating real-time traffic data (incidents and flow) with maps to support advanced navigation applications.
In January 2003, deCarta merged with Televoke, and added to its product portfolio, the Universal Telematics Server, the leading ASP for automated, GPS-based tracking, notification, and control.
As part of the merger, the Company did a capital restructuring with additional financing from Mobius Venture Capital, Cardinal Venture Capital, and WI Harper Group.
In June 2006 the company changed its name from Telcontar to deCarta, based on the latin word for map; "CARTA".
Today, deCarta’s software and services support millions of users of location-based services and generates over 2 Billion maps per month for its customers.
