Meyer De WolfeThe company
continuity and success comes from a family who have mastered their
industry for nearly 100 years. From the humble beginnings of 1909,
De Wolfe Music was founded by the highly respected and iconic
figure, Meyer De Wolfe, who began his career as a Music Director
within the film industry. Born in Holland in 1887, Meyer came to
England at the turn of the century to join the orchestra of the
Duke of Devonshire, as well as conducting the scores of countless
silent films including Charlie Chaplin, D.W Griffith and Mary
Pickford. He soon became Music Director and Conductor of the Rank
Organisation, the North Metropolitan Theatres and the Electric
Pavilions, having 400 orchestras under his control in which he
selected music from a classical repertoire.
In 1927, with the
advent of talkies, it was possible to synchronise and record music
onto film and thus, the first production library of recorded music
was born. In its infancy, de Wolfe recorded music for the cinema
onto 35mm Nitrate Film. From this were gramophone recordings cut
from wax with a mother and master that were produced from shellac
and played at 78rpm. Into the fifties came the magnetic tape and
the beloved vinyl followed playing at 78 and 33rpm through to the
CD’s and download facilities available today.
