Dead Space Ignition is a survival horror text-based adventure video game developed by Visceral Games and Sumo Digital and published by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade.[1] It is a midquel to the upcoming survival horror third-person shooter video game Dead Space 2 (accurately an interquel between two main games),[2] which was released on October 12, 2010.[1] The game takes the form of what executive producer Steve Papoutsis describes as an "interactive comic-style game" and is written by Antony Johnston, the author of the Dead Space comic book series.[1]

The official EA press release outlined the basic plot of Dead Space Ignition, revealing that the game "takes place on the Sprawl [the setting of Dead Space 2] and challenges players to survive the initial Necromorph outbreak", which then sets up the plot of Dead Space 2.[1] Executive producer Steve Papoutsis suggested that the game, the first of a number of related additions to the series, "will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, and will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers."[1][2]
Unlike the two main titles in the series, Dead Space Ignition is not a third-person shooter game, instead acting more as an interactive 'text-based adventure' game.[3] In the official press release, EA explained that "Dead Space Ignition combines an interactive comic-style story with three unique hacking mini games; Hardware Crack, Trace Route and System Override ... [and] features a unique “Choose Your Own Adventure” type narrative, allowing players to survive the horrific Necromorph outbreak in multiple ways. The game offers four unique endings and upon completion of each one, players will be rewarded with unlocks including an exclusive suit, all of which can be used by Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 2."[1]
