Deep Fried is a weekly webcomic written and illustrated by Jason Yungbluth.
It takes place in Unmerica, a cartoon parody of the
United States, with characters and happenings exaggerating current events.
The current format is full-page and color, with earlier comics in black and white and the strip's predecessor, Beepo & Roadkill, done in a four-panel newspaper style.
Common subject matter includes politics, drugs, old media, 1980s cinema and television, and the apparently insidious nature of clowns and their trade.
Characters
Beepo- is a chain-smoking freelance clown with a tendency to show up at his gigs with a respectable blood alcohol level.
He believes that "God made me a clown" although he also blames his uncle (who was a clown) and Batman comics (Batman lived in a "world ruled by clowns", namely the Joker).
He is almost never shown without his clown makeup, mullet, and cigarette.
His alcoholism and tendency to be mean towards kids results in constant legal and employment problems.
He has been fired and rehired by several agencies, in addition to his freelancing.
He was once outfitted with a tracking anklet for leaving his fly unzipped too often, and almost killed when he inadvertantly ended up near a daycare, thus causing the anklet to summon laser fire from orbital satellites.
He has never had a healthy relationship, and for most of his life, was addicted to the scent of "Strawberry Shortstack" dolls.
The dolls served as his only form of sexual stimulation until Roadkill forced him to stop.
Roadkill then successfully managed to hook him up with a girl at a bar through the use of a date rape drug, although Beepo was unaware of the drug at the time.
He is often the butt end of masturbation jokes.
He very often plays the role of the simple fool, Roadkill's unwitting and unwilling partner in crime.
He drives a yellow
VW Beetle with purple polka dots and a large turnkey on the back, obviously a clown car.
His car also has a muffler that is eternally dragged along the pavement.
He was accidentially killed by Nana when she was put under a form of mind control and ordered to kill Roadkill.
He was later brought back to life through a demonic ritual.
Roadkill- is either a cat, demon, or both.
He claims to be the antichrist, and goes to great lengths to cause death and destruction everywhere he goes.
Beepo found and rescued Roadkill after accidentially running him over.
He has been with Beepo ever since, and is the primary antagonist.
Following his short but glamorous career as a clown pimp, he founded the American Terror Party, a third party which supported Osama binZilla as their candidate for the 2004 election until he was revealed to be a myth.
He is the leader of the Sons of Zeratul vigilante squad/Starcraft clan, which has been dormant after it 'accidentally' killed most of President Humungus's administration in a botched attempt at laser heckling.
Following Beepo's death t and a short-lived zombie internet viral (which got Squints killed) he began a search for a new costar.
One night he met the mysterious "Lyle" in a bar, who was very obviously intended to be the long lost
Lymann who appeared briefly in the comic strip
Garfield.
Initially, Lyle and Roadkill got along great, as they were both devoted to chaos, mayhem, and murder.
After awhile, however, Lyle begins to start beating up Roadkill, and it is made clear that Lyle has usurped Roadkill's former place, while Roadkill has become the new Beepo (this goes so far as to show Roadkill wearing clown makeup and juggling).
Trying to get away from Lyle, he flees to Yogurt and Sherbert's home for abused sidekicks, a place which he apparently sent Beepo to regularly.
Yogurt then tells Roadkill that Lyle is actually "Lylon," one of the clingiest gods in the Necromicon whom Roadkill accidentally summoned when he said that he wanted a new costar.
Sherbert & Yogurt assisted in bringing back his old sidekick, Beepo, through a deonic ritual that ended up parodying the stem cell research debate.
Somehow, Squints was also brought back to life.
Squints-A clerk at a convenience store who is often seen talking to famous super heroes/villains.
He Beepo's best friend and an occasional accomplice to Roadkill.
He has a tendency to enjoy a variety of illegal substances with Beepo and Roadkill, primarily
marijuana.
It isn't totally clear how he came to be associated with Beepo and Roadkill, but he seems to enjoy their company, even though he is as disturbed and put off by Roadkill's violent tendencies as Beepo is.
He eats a lot of snack food.
He was killed by government officials after Roadkill told them that he was the zombie that Roadkill used on a disturbing website.
Somehow, he was brought back to life around the same time as Beepo was.
The Boogie Bunnies-Yogurt & Sherbert are two rabbits that must dance or they will die.
They are often used to provide a sickeningly sweet perspective on tragedies such as the Iraq War.
They own a shelter for battered cartoons, pee pink lemonade,& are Zoth worshippers.
They assisted in Beepo's resurrection.
Chad & Chad-Blonde Chad & Dark haired Chad are naturally ocurring clones who portray the voice of the common asshole.
Able to assume any role or profession, they are often seen as anchormen on the television program Newsbeat.
They seem to be a parody of the stereotypical right-wing talk show host/newscaster/reporter/etc.
Phillip Mcdisney-The official mascot of corporate America, Philip McDisney has devoted himself to the causes of market penetration, brand saturation and muscular democracy.
Previous career achievements include Crystal Pepsi and convincing Jefferson Starship that "Jefferson" was a little...ethnic.
Phillip is used as a stand-in whenever a greedy corporate entity is needed.
He will push and twist anything into a more profitable situation, and appears to have no morals whatsoever.
Rags the World Trade Center Flag-A common sight at memorials, bowl games, opening ceremonies and the like, Rags ensures that our nation will never forget 9/11.
Never ever ever!
Rags knows that 9/11 changed everything, that freedom isn't free, and that we must roll!
Have YOU rolled today?
Rags is often brought in to distract, distort, or cover-over any inconvenient facts surrounding 9/11 or the subsequent wars.
Sarge & Fazool-Sarge and Fazool both lost their arms in the Iraq War.
Big-hearted Sarge adopted Fazool and brought him to the US, where Fazool was only a little disappointed to learn that the right to bare arms would not apply to him.
Fazool seems wholly desensitized to violence, since he watched his parents burned alive by American firepower.
He and sarge seem surprisingly cheery and friendly, considering their condition.
Slamwich-A living breathing talking samwich who came to life in Shamus McGoldberg's Irish kosher deli who immediately took to fighting crimes.
He speaks and acts like a mexican masked wrestler.
He shits out ready-made sausages, which Shamus McGoldberg then sells.
His arch-nemesis is another sandwich/wrestler named "Islamwich".
Clarrissa-Six year old Clarissa would like it to be known that no one should infer from her sour disposition that her family is anything but healthy and normal, and that reading anything into her drawings of violent, nocturnal attacks by wolves would not be productive.
She is very obviously being sexually abused by her father, yet her family refused to acknowledge it or do anything about it.
Her schoolteacher seems equally oblivious, despite the obvious signs of abuse, and her somewhat graphical drawings of a squirrel that is obviously her being raped by a wolf that is obviously her father.
She takes great steps to attempt to fend off her father's abuse, even going to the point of gluing the lock to the bathroom when she takes a shower.
These steps seem to do little, though.
Weapon Brown-After the apocalypse, a certain round-headed kid grows up mean and angry in the wastelands.
Chuck "Weapon" Brown has devoted his life to wishy washy revenge and tracking down a red-haired girl.
A parody of
Charlie Brown, his world is a mix of
Mad Max and
Peanuts and features many characters who are obviously very strongly based on those of the Peanuts comics.
He is also subject to many of the running gags that appeared in the Peanuts series (such as the kite eating tree or Lucy's holding of a football) and many of the jokes and gags that came later with the series (such as Peppermint Patty's implied lesbianism)
President Humungus-The Overlord-in-Chief of Unmerica, America's television reality, President Humungus rules with a velvet fist.
He is an obvious parody of
President George W.
Bush in that he has the same speech impediment, and his cabinet directly parodies that of the Bush administration.
A corrupt and incompetent leader, he is never seen without his hockey mask and enormous ears.
He is also surprisingly short and small, for some reason.
He never misses a chance for a photo op, and is an expert at re-directing blame.
He is always eager to drag Unmerica to war, and brought the war in Iraq in an attempt to stop the
Decepticons from transforming into
weapons of mass destruction.
Nana-Whether she's being kicked, shot, punched, mutated or crushed, nothing dampens this sunny nonagenarian's spirits.
Will the same be true when she's being flayed alive while killer bees are pumped into her lungs?
Stay tuned!
Nana is brought in whenever an old lady needs to die to make things more tragically comedic.
She was held hostage a few times to try and encourage donations to and purchases from the website, although this ended up being ineffective, since everyone wanted to see her die.
